It was a great puzzle - really well-constructed and clever, with every stage going in logical sequence and with completely fair a-ha moments. This was one of the puzzles in the Hunt this year that I wished I had written.

You're just missing one last a-ha. But you are very, very close.

Maybe some other people will chip in and build on what you've done.

For #1 - if you wallpaper a room, you lay down the paper.

For #4 - D at each end, (IDOL - OIL) plus E plus FORME (Italian for shapes)

So.... this weekend was the annual MIT Puzzlehunt (which finally "formally" ended a couple of hours ago.) It was the usual collection of absurd nonsense - a crossword transmitted entirely in morse code, book title puns, inverse neologisms (like "leakfast" instead of "brunch") and so on and on. Anywa...

We've had a couple. But not using that specific code which is probably why I didn't recognise it.

Oh yeah. 7-segment seems obvious now. (It clearly wasn't musical notes, but I couldn't think how A-G could be indicating anything. Not that I'd thought about it much, because my brain has been mostly mush this week thanks to some sort of 'flu thing - not Covid though.)

I don't think they are; it's just that there is only really one plausible answer for each of them even when you only have a couple of letters. But I thought the mix of "cryptic" and "quick" approaches was good fun, especially for Christmas.

This is not my envious expression. Not at all.
