Oh dear!! I think my limited knowledge of FB has been overtaken. ;). I only use it to keep in touch with some relatives through messages. But I am willing to join in and help. But can I ask will we be using our own name or our PB member name?

It looks like there is a combination of some real people and some fake names - so take your pick.

Ah - an ideal person to ask. What does this give you that postcards, phone, text, and email doesn't? Contact is one of the reasons quoted to me for "needing" to get on FB (usually from people who have never touched a computer before).

Oddly, it's because a lot of people who use FB think it is the Internet. Twenty years ago, the same was true with AOL. They haven't interacted with any other online tools so they don't know that there are other ways - and those that have like the convenience of a consistent and reliable interface, regardless of how good or bad it is as a system.

well can i wave and shout here :-D (and pretend to answer)

i do basically the same,
i use it to keep in touch with relatives abroad and friends
basically i use it like i would emails
but it also gives a shared platform so rather than sending a pic to 5 diff people i post it once "tag" the 5 people in the photo and we can all comment and see each other comments on the photo directly
so different threads (diff photos, direct messages, commenting on a status responding to invites to an event (and talking on that event's page) ) all are separated off on their own allowing a communal chat/one on one whilst having more than one topic open hopefully without going off topic or spreading a chat over multiple thread

it both simplifies and increases the complexity in diff ways

that said if someone messages me on facebook and im offline ill get a text i can reply to to chat
so going online is mostly for games...

[edited to add the stuff below]

and as im sure you know
once people know a system that seems to make thing easier they use that

i could for instance use my hotmail account to email people, use its virtual drive to share images and use its free website space to create a blog while using windows live messenger to chat real time with them and simply use headers and cc's to create group chats

yes i do have access to ways to do everything i do, but face book packages it together and i dont have the hassle of running around looking after it

Actually that does highlight part of my own personal problem. The people I 'know' I tend to know through forums (like this one) and that is where I talk to them. There aren't another random group of people who I have contact with in any other way.

That's what I mean about people thinking Facebook is the Internet. They have no idea that forums like this exist, and so use FB as their contact mechanism with others who share their interests. And because FB provides an adequate way to do all of the other things (like posting photos and talking about common interests etc.) then they don't see the need to go to lots of other places that are more specialised in those things.
But the trade-off to that is that not everyone on there is willing (or wants) to learn about how FB does things. And that can lead to some very unfortunate side effects (some of them being - it has been suggested by the more cynical - what FB wants to happen...)
That's partly why I am nervous about a Puzzlebrains presence on Facebook. Not because I don't have utmost trust in the people here or their good intentions, but because as soon as you enter FB, you are opening up to people who are only interested in causing trouble - and they probably aren't even "friends of friends" but are at a level removed from that. That's why I have tried to keep this forum relatively "invisible" on web searches: it's not completely impossible to find, but you really have to know it is here first!

That is why the 'main Puzzlebrains page' on FB will only point to the PB.com site. At no time will it ever point to this forum. No one on here should feel they MUST use Facebook - that's important to note (for you MBH). Those of you who have joined at my suggestion are great and very brave. :D Please remember, this is to help the circulation of Puzzlebrains - not to expose you all to general undesirable people. The FB group will be controlled.

I must admit I like FB. Mainly because I can keep up with what people are up to without having to email them/contact them in other ways, as I have a fair number of friends who aren't on forums like this. I'm also quite a nosey person and it satisfies my nosiness!
I don't play games really on there - I don't really trust the apps not to pass on my details, and I do regularly check my account settings, just in case FB has changed them for me.. but, as with most things, as long as you take basic precautions, it's fine.

LOL - Thank you eirian for saying what I keep biting my tongue NOT to say because it's rude.

I'm seeing a group today who are all recovering from drug and alcohol problems. By giving them computer skills it will help with job prospects and give them an interest in life away from the addictions they are beating. One woman told me that her kids (19 and 22 - so should know better) keep putting in their Facebook status things like "Going to meet Mum at ......" and when she gets there she finds the very people she's trying to avoide waiting to catch up with her.

One thing I don't understand is how exactly we will attract new people if the facebook group is to be controlled. I think what I'm saying is how will anybody other than our friends know about it?

Or does that come in the next lesson?

Well, I assume that the idea is that word might spread. We can but try!! If it doesn't take off, then there's nothing lost, is there?

Our comments will be seen passing in the newsfeed on friends lists. Myself, clvrlad and a few others have several friends on there - so it will spread. If anyone else comments it will appear on their newsfeeds too - so hopefully it will spread that way. That's why it isn't essential for the newbies to FB to have many friends :D

At work this morning I was demonstrating forums with the aid of PB front screen. A woman was very interested so I pulled up .com to show off the Advent Calendar (as I've done before). I already know she is a FaceBook user so I've said I'll point her in the right direction when the group is up and running.

Speaking of the last Advent screen - any way of sneaking an index somewhere on the screen? I keep having to call up random puzzles looking for something recognizable as do-able in a 2-minute intro. [Finally found the MP3 player which provoked Diva naming and song title questioning :D Job done]

Thank you for that reminder - I meant to do one but it never got close to the top of the "to do" list. :)
And yes, I would imagine that some of the "MP3 player" puzzles would actually be quite good for an audience who don't know what to expect, because popular song titles are something a lot of people know - often without knowing they know.
