OK try this

Hold this up so that the direction you're looking in is at the bottom of the chart. The bottom edge will then be th real horizon and the centre is the point directly above you. This chart works for the UK in January.

and thanks from me too. I shall print it out at work if I remember.
Mind you, it might be easier to see on a laptop rather than a piece of paper outside in the dark.

I had a fabulous view of Mars last night btw - we had a really clear sky and a very cold night- as I walked back from my friend's house in the wee small hours. It was quite big and a lovely orangy red, even to the naked eye. Sadly, the binoculars we had have disappeared down to Cornwall with my son (well, I suppose he's using them for real things like birdwatching), but nevertheless it was wonderful to see. Unfortunately it was so cold I couldn't stand still and gaze for too long for fear of freezing to the spot. :P (It was one of those nights when the cold hurts your chest to breathe in.)

I saw it Friday night - I was told about it by the gang on my bus at work that morning, and saw it above and to the left of the Moon. Very impressive. I wasn't quick enough to get on this thread and tell everyone else though

Clear (but cold). Lovely stargazing weather if you're dressed right for it.
