Re: Exam Results
We have a Wii and even with three children in the house and summer holidays it hasn't been used for over a month, and it was proably a month or more before that as the handsets had uncharged themselves. They'd far rather be on the playstation, and queue up for that. The best bit about the Wii is making the little person look like you!

Duck everybody, the battle may be about to begin in earnest now.
I've never even seen a Wii
(but I have heard of them. My son once tried to suggest we got a family Wii, so it wouldn't count as HIS birthday present, and my daughter countered with the suggestion that we got a family ballgown with a summer ball coming up) He does have a Nintendo 64
I am totally useless at what I would term computer games but I do enjoy puzzles where I can take my time to think about what I want to do.

My idea of a computer game is Civ. I haven't played since the old 486 died.
That and text-based adventure games like Infocom and Level 9. Oh and Magnetic Scrolls - on my Amstrad CPC6128 they had a great range with some nice screenshots too, but the text was the important thing. Guild of Thieves was brilliant.

Re: Exam Results
;lol: Loving the banter
Looks like I got all the game-play genes in our family Bunny - growng up in Whitley Bay I spent my childhood in the amusement arcades. I saw all the original classics - Space Invaders, Galaxions, Pac Man, Lunar Lander (now that was a game... subtle rather than smash-em-up).
There was a lovely game called Marble Madness which had a large track-ball as a controller instead of buttons. I've always liked more 'real-life' control mechanisms than just push button (far better with a handgun than a joystick and push-button, if you know what I mean)
First purchase from eBay was a Playstation2 since my old computers were never going to be 'games' machines. I'm very much into 1st-person shooter games, and titles such as Red Faction (where you're fighting your way out of the mines on Mars) let me see it as an alternative story-telling to both books or films. The story is layed out, and you're 'guided' through it, but you need to interact if you want to find out what happens next.
A few years ago (it's probably still around) was a police shoot-out game called 24/7 where the machine monitored your body position and you needed to duck and dodge to avoid being shot. A couple of games on that and I was knackered - what a way to get a workout
Now the Wii is using the same idea to get people moving (but my couple of goes on one have only been 'averagely' successful.
On the Playstation I've got the game of "The DaVinci Code", on the PC I've got a couple of 'CSI' games where you solve the crime, and at work on the bus I've got a few educational games including one that teaches you to touch type with Pumba and Timor,
There are games out there for everyone.

If you want to see state-of-the-art in Interactive Fiction (the somewhat pretentious name for "text adventures"), try Blue Lacuna. I really do recommend it. Oh, and the "remastered" version of The Secret of Monkey Island is pretty good too.
(And yes, Civ is my ideal game too. No time pressure, no fast-reactions, no overblown physics or graphics engines or the need for a hyper computer. Just a nice idea executed really well. The only downside is that it takes so bl**dy long to play once you've got a good one going.)

Re: Exam Results
I did try the wii. My daughter's boyfriend got one free with some mobile phone deal. It was a bowling game. I have to say I don't like bowling in real life, so why would I want to pretend to bowl?
I also tried that thing with the pretend guitar (is it called Guitar Hero?). I was inutterably crap at it (guitarists apparently do tend to find it hard!!). And again, frankly, I'd rather play a real guitar.
I just don't "get" it. Can't see the appeal at all. I'd rather be having a laugh with real people, or playing games with others so there is some interaction going on.
And Scurra, I won't admit I'm wrong, because I'm not.
QED.

Re: Exam Results
Well duh. That's largely why the Wii has been so popular, because a lot of the games on it are based on the fact that they eventually discovered that people much prefer playing games together. (Heck, you already know I'm a boardgamer - and whilst it is true that, as Clvrlad observes, you can play them "on-line", that's rather missing the point. Mind you, I think Clvrlad needs a rather rapid burst of education if he still thinks Monopoly counts as a proper modern board game. But that's a whole separate argument.)Bunnylump wrote:I'd rather be having a laugh with real people, or playing games with others so there is some interaction going on.
Nope, that doesn't work, because I think I'd already established that I was right. And since everyone knows that two people having an argument can't possibly both be right...The Phantom Tomato Staker wrote:And Scurra, I won't admit I'm wrong, because I'm not.QED.

We had a Wii here briefly (borrowed), and Wii Fit proved to have just the thing for me - a game where you have just to sit still for as long as possible. I scored at least 10 times as much as everyone else who'd tried it. I wonder why.

Re: Exam Results
Actually, you are both claiming to be right. It's the "I'm right because I say so" factor, and doesn't eliminate either party (or even both) from being in the wrong.Scurra wrote:Nope, that doesn't work, because I think I'd already established that I was right. But there is always the Man And Woman Argument default setting:
For the rest of this fascinating insight to Arguments, see the attached file. So perhaps it could be said that Bunnylump is always right, but Scurra is never wrong...From the point of view of the Woman, she is always right - and the Man is always wrong. So whatever viewpoint the Man takes, the Woman always takes the opposing viewpoint, as the Man's must be wrong and she is always right.
From the point of view of the Man, he is never wrong. This does not mean he is always right, but on the occasions he is not right, he is merely mistaken.
Unfortunately, the number of ways of doing something wrong far exceed the number of ways of doing it right. G. Kasparov

this perfectly good pointless argument.
I had a little bet with myself. Scurra was missing and Hazel had her say. I just knew that Scurra would have his say - whether Bunny was missing or not- within the hour.
Next round - any bets on the time?
