Re: The things kids say
I've been reading and scribing science exam papers for a very intellectually challenged boy today.
One question was
Which colourless, odourless gas is used in food packaging to keep the food fresh?
a. Nitrogen
b. Oxygen
c. Carbon Dioxide
d. Carbon Monoxide.
And yes, he did choose D.
another was
Which of these is the most likely to collide with the Earth?
A A moon
B A comet
C A meteorite
D A Star.
Yes, you guessed it. D.
I felt like shooting myself. Or possibly sticking my head in a freshly opened bag of salad... but I might as well just wait and anytime now we'll get hit by a passing star!!

Re: The things kids say
OK this made me laugh today. We have a second year university student in helping in our department (he's getting work experience and eventually wants to be a maths teacher.) He came to help me with some year 7 exams today, and the boy he was sitting with said "Hey look at that I get the cool teacher!" I said
"Flipping cheek! Are you suggesting that I'm NOT cool?"
The pupil replied
"No Miss, you're RED HOT!"
He will go far.
I'm not sure if "red hot" is a compliment or an insult. I just hope it's not the polar opposite of "really cool"!

You clearly don't remember being 11, Clvrlad. When you're that old, anyone older than about 19 is "old". I've got 30 years of oldness to contend with on top of that...

Re: The things kids say
My daughter went in for a preparatory day this week at her new school. She asked the class to fill out a "passport into year 4", where they had to fill out things about themselves, what their strengths were, what they'd like to improve etc. She brought them home, and some are just priceless. For example:
What I'm really excited about...BEING TORT BY MISS ... (what a creep!!)
What I'm good at...MAKING PEPLE CUMFY (
)
What I want to get better at... LURNING TO SPEL (fair point)

Re: The things kids say
Wonderful stuff
And now we have BOTH of you to supply gems like that to this thread.
Hope she gets cumfy in her work and helps her little peple lurn. I was going to make a 'cake' joke about 'tort[e]' but sensibly checked the spelling first - I was suprised to find that Tort is the French word for a "wrong." That sounds about right

Re: The things kids say
Tort is used by the legal profession to classify certain types of crime. I can't remember which crimes are Torts, it's a long time since I studied Law as part of my degree. (a small part)
A classic comment from Lally on being told by her new school that she will be studying Latin next year. " Which country do they speak Latin in? " (She opted for it, and I did query with her whether she really wanted to be in the Latin , French, Japanese half of the class, but she was desparate to do Japanese. Now I know why the fact that she had to do Latin as well didn't put her off.

Re: The things kids say
My daughter hated latin at first and when we went round senior schools for her one of the questions she used to ask was "how soon can I give up latin?"
Then she decided she quite liked it and did it for GCSE. Then she carried on and did it at AS and A level. And then she studied it (with French) at university!

Re: The things kids say
F does Latin and is keeping it up for GCSE . He moans regularly about double Latin, but seems to be quite good at it. It's the Japanese I'm worried about, although OH speaks a bit, which is probably why it appeals to her.
Re: The things kids say
What were the other language options? (Spanish. German and Russian?) These days I'm telling people to learn Chinese rather than Japanese though...
Never put off till tomorrow what you can do the day after tomorrow.

Re: The things kids say
Other language options? Gibberish, Rubbish, and Bull
Latin was never an option in our school, but after my failure in French and poor 'escape' into German, I don't think I would have fancied it anyway.
What that means is I don't know how good a quote this is from an HP fanfic I'm reading:

It hardly inspires me with confidenceHe paused for a long moment, rubbing his hands together as he worked out a translation. Dratted Latin and its flexible word order. Sometimes you could hardly tell what the original meant, though he was hardly going to admit that to Harry.
Re: The things kids say
Other option was French Spanish Russian. German is not being offered for her year as they rotate which of the six languages is left out. I would have gone for that combination (although K hated Russian and Spanish even if she was very good at them) , but she had her heart set on Japanese.

Re: The things kids say
I had to learn Latin for a year. Can't remember ANY of it now!! Oh apart from Esse Quam Videri "To be, rather than to seem to be." (My school motto!)

Classic comment from Lally while watching Top Gear item on sports cars:
"I like those low ones that sound like a sheep"
Can you guess what car she was referring to?
