One year there were some young lads doing community service and chopping back the growth on the canal bank.
That night the engine disappeared off our boat moored on the non towpath side.
The council refused to believe there might be a connection.
There's no point in having a last minute if you don't use it!

Yes similarly a couple of years ago a lorry was parked at our premises overnight - it disappeared and the police said they knew it was at the local traveller site but politically it would be too sensitive to do anything about it.... we now have to lock all our lorries and vans away at night or keep them off site.

My brother in law is a tree surgeon. He's had 5 of those big high sided trailers nicked (usually by travellers) and most recently had his landrover nicked with all his tools in it. They found the landrover (it's very old and sign written, other wise they probably would have had that too) abandoned in an old traveller site. A local resident (who happened to be a retired policeman) saw them ditch it and take all the chainsaws etc. He gave the police exact descriptions plus a number plate of the car, but the police have done...you guessed it... nothing. Meanwhile, because this has happened to him so many times, he can't get anything insured. So now he can't work. :( (Well until he can find several thousands of pounds to replace the tools and fix the landrover).

I'm NOT saying all travellers are like this, because they aren't. But it most certainly is a very serious problem with some of the local families.

completing my penaltimate ou essay. quickest one so far. I am getting progressively quicker as puzzle brains is using up all the time I used to have. In fact I am not sure i would have taken the course had i known about the impact of pb.

Interesting fact is that it is a business degree and one of the areas is a communities of practice which basically means people working together in a field of common ground or expertise to further this knowledge by sharing information and I thought the puzzlebrains forum is definately a CoP. Not sure I can use this in my next essay thought!!

One essay one exam to go.....

Usually it is a couple of days into the next month, maybe the 2nd of September is when the next one will arrive???

Maybe I will only send out Sparkouts- that will keep him occupied and away from SUMS -and all the rest of you will have to join us if you want puzzles

AHA! But your cleverly laid plan doesn't work with ME because I've already seen them!! I'll only respond to REAL incentives (maybe if you send me a troupe of naked men who like washing up and gardening, I might think about it).

... working backwards.

I am using a computer program "winforecast" which I have had no training on. Do not even use sage. Have spent two weeks trying to get the end of year to balance, deciding on next year's forecasts, inputing them and making changes to the system so that all the prepayments etc tie up with my accounting practices. Have created so many backups I got confused and overwrote them. Today when I noticed nothing was balancing with my TB and after some considerable time found that by changing the accounting preferences from prepaids to cost it knocks out any of the earlier records that were prepaid at that time making it all not balance again. Managed to find a copy from last Friday and am now going to start working on the forecasts again....

sorry to rant but it is nice to get it off my chest as no one else at work remotely cares. Infact if I mention it to the MD who is 78 he wonders why we use computers anyway as they are always causing problems. He does have a point but I think he doesn't realise that modern businesses need management accounts just to survive especially if you need periodic finance via the bank. I would go back to ledger cards in a flash but would probably need another 3 people in our office to cope.

hope everyone elses day was more fun.

Grrrrr

My website is down at the moment, but my 'tag line' for the company (and the reason I use that Taijitu or Yin-Yang symbol) is "Harmony between Man and Machine" - computers are supposed to remove drudgery and sort out problems, not cause them.

Problems = poor programming, or poor testing, or poor installation or poor training.

(You already said you weren't trained on the software, and it obviously gave no indication in messages of the 'effect' changing the payment types was going to have) :( Bring back 'bespoke' programming, and have the people who pay for it understand WHY! ;)

Ledger cards - that takes me back - the first business computer I worked on had a front-feed slot in the printer area that pulled the ledger card in, printed the next line, and popped it back out :) All of the Co-Operative Societies ran on them.
