I made one shaped like a 2CV for a friend who drove one. Most of mine a flat though, with something painted on the top.

Yes that sounds like the gold powder I use and I mix it with vodka! I did a harry potter one once that had golden snitches all round the edge (Those little gold balls, with painted wings) and broomsticks made out of flakes and matchmakers. I bought a plaque thing with a harry potter picture made out of icing for the middle. I sprayed a couple bright green with white lines for football pitches and cricket pitches, with little players on. They were fairly simple. It feels like cheating to me to buy the children's birthday cakes.

Oh, the cakes Wulfruna has made! I get a birthday one still from her - my birthday being just after christmas she makes an extra one when she's making the Christmas cake - I remember one year she did a spidersweb in icing and a spider out of marzipan. Yummm.
Mind you, she's made both my wedding cakes too. First time around it was a castle! Complete with towers and drawbridge (I believe she used baked bean tins to bake the towers). Second was more traditional and a friend of my grandmother's (her mother) made some wonderful sugar flowers for it - and I still have the main display in a vase on my mantlepiece.

The easiest cake I ever made was a hedgehog. Start by making a round chocolate cake which you cut in half. Stand the two halves up and stick together and cover all over with chocolate icing. Don't worry about smoothing it too much. Then stick halved matchsticks (the chocolate ones, not the things you light fires with) all over it, a malteser for a nose and two choc buttons with a dot of white icing on them for the eyes. My daughter liked it so much I got repeat requests.

Mum did something similar for me when I was a child, but it was cooked in a metal rabbit jelly mould. The problem was I think she had the oven at the wrong temp a sit was so thick it probably wanted long and slow cooking, so the middle didn't cook through and had to be scooped out. Then it was decorated with chocolate icing and almonds for spikes, button noe and eyes.

Your round cake LAT sounds just like my 2cv same principle, but plain butter icing (the car was cream colour) with those diamond jelly shape cake decorations for lights. Chocolate melted and cut out into windows.

I was wondering where they were - they seem to have been omitted from the puzzle book. Was this through necessity (not enough room) or design (to infuriate us)?
Though I did manage the Sword Swallower and Pole Balancer without hints.

I would like to take this opportunity to point out that you should be able to do ALL of them without hints!!
They weren't written as "puzzle + hint you need to solve" you know
Anyway, people seem to be doing alright so far

(It was partly by necessity. Given the excessive amount of space needed for the Fool solutions, there really wasn't much room left for hints this time around. Although I realise that I could have probably squeezed them into the "programme" if I had realised it in time.)
Never put off till tomorrow what you can do the day after tomorrow.
All of my puzzles are simple and obvious. For certain values of "simple" and "obvious".

today I've mostly been looking at the sky and wondering what I am seeing - patches of blue with white fluffy things with a big bright yellow ball
I havent seen that for weeks - we have mostly been very dull and overcast. :D

Luckily we have missed out on the floods - hopefully all of you are ok

I haven't heard of any floods either, perhaps they are localised?

I've hardly glanced at the magazine, I'm saving it for after SUMS.

Hope your son is better.

I read it as "four to go in Tightrope Walker - that's come a long way"

I'd be mightily impressed with 4 puzzles left so early into September!
