I am glad someone else read Bond at an early age I read it from the age of 10 and used to read it during English classes with the dust cover from the book we were supposed to be reading on it. Got very confusing when we had to read aloud in class.MBH wrote:After saying that, low-brow doesn't necessarily mean stupid or easy. Ian Flemming's James Bond books were not the easiest read as a 12-13-14 year old, and I think I came out OK English-wise apart from my dodgy spelling.

Re: I'm Busy Reading....
And surely the Bridge game at the start of Moonraker is one of the most genuinely tense scenes in the whole series?! It makes the golf game in Goldfinger look quite pedestrian really, and somehow feels more risky than most of the "secret agent" stuff. I have to confess that I'm more of a Saint fan myself - Simon Templar is somehow much more engaging as a character, even if his adversaries aren't nearly as memorable.

Sepulchre, by Kate Mosse, for the second time.
I read Labrynth twice too. Missed too much first time around.

My most recent read was A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini (probably haven't spelled that right). An amazing book, abosolutely heart -rending, and the most unbelievable part is that it's written by a man. Which, if nobody had told me, I would never have guessed.
You're only given a little spark of madness. You mustn't lose it.

At the moment I am reading JPR Williams autobiograophy as I am a rugby fanatic.
If I enjoy books I will read them over and over - I have lost count of the times I have read Lord of the rings. I also read the Saint books long time ago.
Also at my luch breaks at work I am plodding through the Chambers Crossword Manual. I am now hooked on cryptic crosswords!

Re: I'm Busy Reading....
I don't really do much reading to be honest. I'm partial to a bit of Jeremy Clarkson now and then though.
However, at the moment, I are mostly bin readin', Robert Peston - Who Runs Britain? WOW, what an enlightening book. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to know the real truth behind the economic mess we are currently in the middle of. I can't proffess to understand all of the stuff he writes but what an absolute eye opener.
Cheers. BB.

Does this explain my ability to get onto the Puzzlebrains site without logging in?Scurra wrote:I am still considering how best to approach this issue, since I'd like people to be able to browse the forums without a full log-in.
I do it via my 'History' selection in the 'Favorites' (sic) facility. It doesn't let me onto the Magazine pages, but the Community pages are accessible.

Currently reading: Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, after eirian mentioned it and I remembered it was still sitting in my "To Read" pile. I could have sworn I'd read it already, but I don't remember any of it so far.

Isn't it annoying when you do that, and you get to chapter 37 and then realise you have read it, and now can't see the point in reading the rest of it, because you can remember the ending?

Re: I'm Busy Reading....
Just started The Suspicions of Mr Whicher or the Murder at Road Hill House, it's a true story written as a murder-mystery, a little bit gruesome but interesting so far.
Re: I'm Busy Reading....
I think I heard that reviewed on the radio, but as usual I can't remember whether I thought. "That's one to avoid" or "I must look out for that". The trouble is, radio 5 do the book and film reviews while I'm driving to fetch the monsters from school, so I never have a pen and paper handy. Mind you, with the books I'm usually put off by the reviews being so smarmy about the authors.

I bought it after reading a review and was intrigued, I'm now about 200 pages in and am finding it very interesting, I would recommend itgiraffe wrote:I think I heard that reviewed on the radio, but as usual I can't remember whether I thought. I miss the Radio 5 book review so have started downloading the pod cast, so if you miss the name of one you like let me know and I may still have it on the ipod.

Yes, highly recommend The Suspicion of Mr Whicher. Have just finished Diary of a Provincial Lady, which I read every five years or so. Yes it is a bit dated, but E M Delafield's observations are very acute.
