I've managed to find time to watch half of this so far, and I hadn't heard of it before either. Wow - it's amazing, isn't it? I've just got to the bit where the mathematician randomly decides that
there really must be 54 teeth rather than 53 "because it is divisible by two". Well that's a good reason to make that decision, isn't it??
(Spoilered in case anyone wants to watch it themselves!)
I hate to say it, but that does add up with a few people I know who are maths mad...they might be REALLY clever at maths, but they have no common sense whatsoever!!

LOL - if you've got that far you've got to finish watching to see the conclusion of that particular wheel and the technique he uses to discover it

We found ourselves watching this at the time - and were totally gripped by the dedication of the researchers - and by the skill of those ancient Greeks (should that be Geeks?
)
And yes, the puzzle of that cog wheel had a wonderful twist to it - it did matter in the end that it was such an unlikely prime number!
But then, I have always been fascinated by the magic of numbers and saddened that so many only see maths as a bore and miss out on the real fun to be had from playing with figures

Obviously my comment wasn't aimed at anyone in particular. And it's a really good job we are all different, isn't it?
Yes, I fully intend watching to the end of this. I love watching programmes about how things are made - I'm no good at creative things myself and hopeless at engineering, but I am absolutely in awe of people who can!!
Thanks for posting the link MBH.

Oh my word, just watched the other half of this. I see what you mean about the mathematician, MBH!!

You've got a number. You've got an unknown number to multiply it by. You've got an answer.
It seems perfectly reasonable to GUESS the unknown number to see if it arrives at the answer - doesn't it?

Exactly!! Even I wouldn't have been THAT daft!! Money for old rope, this specialist thing, isn't it?
The thing I was left wondering about this programme was the poor chap who had agreed to make the custom built x ray scanning machine, despite his financial advisors telling him that he would go bankrupt if he did it!! I'm just wondering if he ever made any money out of it, or if he did, indeed, go bankrupt?

Is anyone watching Horizon at the moment. They're trying to explain Aha moments in the brain. I'm hoping to learn something useful!

Yes - wasn't it fascinating! I
think I learnt that if I've been staring at one of Scurra's puzzles for ages, searching in vain for inspiration, then I should try shutting my right eye and just looking with the left. Apparently inspiration hits on the right side of the brain, which is controlled from the left eye..... well that's what I thought one experiment showed, at least

I thought it was saying that you should go out and mow the lawn...?
I did think that the programme still didn't really try to answer the most interesting question, which is "where does the idea come from in the first place?" It's all very well to suggest why some people have more ideas/improvisation skills than others and how we can improve our chances of having them, but not what the ideas actually are!
Never put off till tomorrow what you can do the day after tomorrow.
All of my puzzles are simple and obvious. For certain values of "simple" and "obvious".

Well, if seeing things out of the left side is the key I ought to be perpetually inspired...I can't say I've noticed it!!
Yes, they did also say that inspiration seems to come when you're not focussing on the task in hand - I often have a "shower moment" when I come up with brainwaves when I least expect them. For example, I had a great idea about the bunting piece* I have been asked to make for my niece whilst in the shower at the swimming pool this evening!! Sadly, no inspiration for current unsolved puzzles was forthcoming...
*It's going to have a beach hut on it, with its own bunting across the front, an opening door with a button handle, and a cat inside the door!
~well that is, assuming I can work out how to use this new fangled sewing machine!!

OK - yet another random find that is (IMHO) a hidden gem for showing off our area. I live here and I never heard about this event, so it was a surprise to stumble across it.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0 ... olk_Dance/
Even if you don't get anything from the dance side of things, I think it shows off our area and our people quite well
[It's only available until the 10th, so catch it while you can]

Ok, so did anyone just watch "Remember Me" on BBC1?
DEFINITELY shouldn't have watched that when I was home alone!

No, I heard an interview about it on the radio, and decided then that it was definitely not for me. Harry Potter is too scary for me. Actually, most things are too scary for me.

I started watching it but decided it was too 'atmospheric' and brooding for me - besides which I was falling asleep so I gave up!

I jumped every time there was a noise; the poor cat kept getting launched off my lap!

Does anyone else watch Saturday Kitchen? I always do (unless I'm going out) and try to get inspiration for what to cook for the weekend. There are often some brilliant recipes...BUT...
...does it drive anyone else absolutely mental when you see the chefs handling raw meat, then NOT washing their hands, and picking up other things with meaty, bacteria filled hands? I've just watched Nigella handling raw lamb, then picking up: vinegar and oil bottles, aubergines, plus all of her serving dishes. Yuk.
Mind you, maybe that's why she has perfect nails and smooth hands and I have dry, cracked hands and broken nails?
