Generally if you type in forum smileys into google then it comes up with some but you could specify a bit more by adding confused or giraffe or whatever.

Ah.... that's a thought........ might try typing in 'giraffe' and see what I get ...... that would really confuse people

I stumbled across these ones and thought they were pretty cool.

The centre one is me lolling on my imaginary airbed off the coral reef in Sharm el Sheik.

Can I steal it for an avatar?

It seems you already have done! I prefer it to the old one!

Why is it that after a while the smileys turn into little boxes with a red cross in them?

I was wondering that as well. I also noticed the same happening on runes. :?

It's because they have ceased to be available at the location you said they were.

When you put them up online, you are inserting the "address" to tell the forum from where to go and fetch the picture - at http://www.smiley-address.com/image-fol ... y-name.gif (as a "non-working" example).

The site location for those smileys has now been changed - whether they have been deleted, renamed, or relocated is not known, but our forum still only has what you originally told it to go by, and so that's where it tries to get the images from.

The internet is a changing place, and you can never have control of what will appear and remain in any given location unless you host the content yourself (not literally, I mean unless you control the server to which the address you posted on the forum points).

Oh yes, I should have thought of that. That happened to the end of one of my "Are you sitting comfortably?" puzzles, and now it doesn't work!! Oh yes, AND flaming Google took the starting point of my map trail puzzle off the map I posted too!! Flipping internet!!
