These things do happen, and they ARE horrendous (I've had my fair share of problems following dodgy surgery). HOWEVER (thinking of my bro and my Fishy Friend for a second) do remember that it's when things go wrong that we hear about them. There are thousands of completely successful operations done each week which make people BETTER.

Oh dear Lord, SparkOut, that's awful. Poor man and poor you!! I'm keeping everything crossed that they manage to reverse the damage in time and get things under control. You must be dreadfully worried.

My brother-in law had this done recently but was back in hospital a couple of weeks later with a wound infection.SparkOut wrote: he had keyhole surgery on his stomach and part of it removed, and a section of intestine cut out and rejoined.
Best wishes to all who have medical 'procedures' coming up this week.

Re: Illnesses and Injuries....
That's rough sparkout - got my fingers crossed for you Uncle, and you poor Aunt.
My mate - a postie - went in for keyhole surgery for a hernia. Whatever went on during the operation we don't know, but changes of decision were made and he now tells people that they used the keyhole for the key to Durham Cathedral
Since this happened at the same time that all the footballers seemed to be flying to Germany (or whereever) to have their own keyhole surgery - and were expected to be playing for their country in 2 weeks - the H.R department were hasseling HIM saying he should be back out walking his rounds after a couple of weeks
He referred them to his doctor

Re: Illnesses and Injuries....
They brought that out about 6 months after I had a 6 inch ditch hacked into my stomach AND a hole for a pipe, not once, but TWICE.
It's such a shame, my promising career as a bikini model was demolished forever.

Sparkout, thinking of you and your family.
Re: Illnesses and Injuries....
Thanks everyone for your thoughts. It's not me to be concerned for though, my aunt is devastated.
I don't honestly think there's a lot to be hopeful about, not with total organ failure, kidneys, liver, etc. It's only the machine keeping him alive at the moment.

Re: Illnesses and Injuries....
Sparkout, that's really terrible news and so sad for all your family. I truly hope everything turns out ok.
Re: Illnesses and Injuries....
Sparkout, do we gather from the RIP in your last post that the worst has happened? Very sorry to hear your news, your aunt must be devastated.
Re: Illnesses and Injuries....
So sorry to hear that.
Re: Illnesses and Injuries....
Yes, they switched him off, just like a dog being put down. I know there was no hope, but (and I wasn't even there and it makes me upset) that it was all so matter of fact, and no value attached to his life, and that he was denied a dignified end and the family denied any chance to say goodbye, all through (IMO) a senseless mistake.giraffe wrote:Sparkout, do we gather from the RIP in your last post that the worst has happened? Re: Illnesses and Injuries....
I sent MBH a text asking if he looked like Action Man yet (from the scar point of view). I just got a text back with a hysterical photo of him with an enormous dressing right across his nose, so I'm guessing the answer is "not yet"!!!
He's got a horrendous headache (but then he has had someone drilling into his skull, so it's not totally surprising), but has pain killers, so hopefully they'll start to take effect soon. Anyway he's been "done" and is out the other side, so fingers crossed he'll soon be much better.

Re: Illnesses and Injuries....
SparkOut, I don't know if you ever saw my paraphrasing of Thora Hird's 'Brick' story, but I feel it's probably relevant to repeat it here.
On DVP Forum, Rotas wrote:I am reminded of Thora Hird's 'Brick' story, which she mentioned in her memoirs 'Scene and Hird'. I will paraphrase it here.
When someone you love dies, God puts a brick in your heart. At first you feel that brick every time your heart beats - its weight, its hard edges, its sharp corners. But slowly, over time, that brick is eroded by the love of God and your beating heart. Your love for your lost one never diminishes, but the brick gradually gets worn away - so slowly that you don't even notice it going. Eventually you wake up one morning and realise that the brick is gone and your heart is light again. Then you know that the grief is over, and the loved one is at peace.
You can substitute 'God' with any spiritual or ethereal being you like, but the sentiment stays the same.
(Coming from VWBabe's thread 'The midnight call....A real life problem to solve')and Lucy wrote:Just wanted to say that what Rotas put about the brick is very true. Following the metaphor, ignoring the brick won't do any good either - people need to allow themselves time to grieve and not be ashamed about that.
Unfortunately, the number of ways of doing something wrong far exceed the number of ways of doing it right. G. Kasparov
