... joining a choir!
I haven't sung in a choir since leaving university, but realised how much I'd missed singing when Wulfruna & Dad kept telling us about the pieces they were doing with their choir, so I decided to find one locally. Went to my first rehersal this evening. Golly it's hard work! My vocal cords feel really swollen... just hope I can speak tomorrow!
really enjoyed it though and was pleasantly surprised at how well I could still find the notes. Will have to wait and see what they think of me at the audition next week!

That is so weird. I VERY nearly joined the choir at school this lunchtime!! But then I got involved in sorting out a fight so I didn't. Not that I can sing very well, to be honest. I am an alto, but have quite a limited range (I could ALMOST but not quite sing the tenor range!!)

you'll have to join at their next rehearsal instead!
I used to sing Tenor on occasion, but only when the men didn't turn up .

I do wish I could sing. But no choir worth it's salt would have me.
Hope the audition goes well eirian.

Yes, good luck with that! I'm sure you'll really enjoy it. I used to love being in the school choir (when I was at school myself).

Rubbish LAT! Any choir worth their salt would have you, and would improve your confidence until you stopped saying 'I wish I could sing' and other things like that!

And Eirian, I hope it goes well, but I'm sure you'll be fine. If you've sung in choirs before, it should all come flooding back to you.

I've never been in a choir. I auditioned for the school choir, but I don't think they'd have me and so I've always been unwilling to sing if anyone is listening. I can sing in tune, it's just not necessarily the right tune.

It was definitely a good idea to join a choir after we retired and found ourselves with some time to spare - even though we hadn't either of us sung seriously since leaving university, which is considerably longer ago than Eirian
I also suspect that before too much longer I may suggest that I join the ranks of the tenors (who already have two women to swell their numbers - tenors are always the most difficult voice for choirs to find....) and I do have trouble soaring up to some of the notes that altos seem to be expected to manage! The problem with the tenor line is that they have to read their notes in the treble clef and pitch it down an octave - I still can't quite get my head around following the notes correctly :?
However, in the last three years we have done some fantastic music, including Bach B Minor Mass, Mozart Requiem and most recently the supreme achievement of the great Monteverdi Vespers 1610 - after that anything else is a doddle!
So... glad you have taken the plunge, Eirian, and have fun - the audition is usually only a case of checking that you can read music and pitch a note.

... Wanting to throttle my son. It's now 5 25, he's still in his pyjamas, and has only in the past couple of hours started to turf stuff out of every cupboard in the house in order to pack for uni. He's SUPPOSED to be going back in the wee small hours tomorrow morning, with his girlfriend, me and my husband. At the moment I don't know if we'll all fit in the car... :x

That's not bad you know. My son used to leave it until about 1.00 am to start thinking about it and then agree to get up an hour and a half before we wanted to leave in order to finish off the actual packing

I'm losing the will to live. We now have NO floor uncovered over the entire ground floor of the house. And we still have to get my son's girlfriend's stuff!!

I sympathise with you totally Biscuit - 2 uni trips in one weekend - what a nightmare!! Shame my son missed Exeter proper by 2 marks ( he's ended up in their Cornwall campus an extra 100 miles away) - we could have gone down together!!

Was thinking I might change my car for something smaller, but maybe not until they've finished at uni  (10 years)

A large car is definitely a plus for trips to Uni. We have a fairly large Volvo and when taking our daughter even I didn't fit in the car as the entire boot and back seat were needed. My son managed with rather less thankfully.

I took a bed to Uni, but I had a friend who was a wind surfer and lived within a few miles. He drove a big white van to transport his surfboards, and I bribed him with chocolate to add my bed to his van.

Oh, we have a big car (OH's is a Mazda 6) but even then it's going to be a squeeze. I had hoped to go with them to share the driving but it's looking remarkably like I could only go if I strap myself to the roof rack or am attached to the back of the car with roller skates...

Well, I could probably enjoy that for a mile or so. However, it might get a bit tedious after 300...
