Thanks, Biscuit. I'll pass this on just in case.

We were talking about the problem with the economy and how the Government was having problems sorting it out.LAT wrote:Exactly how did we get from the original posting to a discussion of coloured jelly?

Don't blame me for the Bunny heading off on a tangent.
Geometry probably isn't her best subject.

Can I join your lessons - sounds funBunnylump wrote:I was teaching geometry to year 7s yesterday. Although I would personally prefer to be teaching them about jelly.
Re: I really do not understand!!!:(
I wonder how many subjects you could validly use jelly as a teaching aid for.

Re: I really do not understand!!!:(
Well, we have used it to make a jelly Grandma's medicine bottle(from George's Marvellous Medicine) on world book day to illustrate a favourite book. Sadly, that was green.
I've just found some wonderful things I could use, sadly no jelly based activities. For example:
Ice cream is placed in a tilted gutter to study flow characteristics, crevasses and glacial landforms.
OR
Students create a custard “acid lake” that melts an ice cream “glacier,” destroying a chocolate cake village.
Mind you, thinking about it, a bowl of jelly with ice cream wafers would be cool to demonstrate plate tectonics.
I'm looking forward to an experiment we have planned at the end of term with the year 10s involving coca cola and mentos...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKoB0MHVBvM

Liquids, solids and gasses springs to mind, but I'm sure you could do something interesting with elasticity in physics, or shining lights through different colour jelly to act as filters for optics.

Brings a whole new meaning to 'food technology'...

Re: I really do not understand!!!:(
Oh I do all sorts. Not usually actually teaching whole classes (except damned year 7 bottom set maths), but I do run some small groups and have some brilliant teachers who let me "play". Some of the science teachers are fantastic fun. I have been known to be exploding washing up liquid bubbles filled with gas in front of bemused year 7s who were "in detention".
Oh, and we made a great volcano using bicarbonate of soda and vinegar in geography, oh, and there's always watching "Blackadder" in history lessons, and designing our own coats of arms (cringe). Yes. Although I have more than my fair share of boringness (e.g. year 10 exams at the moment) I do get to have lots of fun, too.

The Coke video was a wonderful find. My I reply by offering proof that Red Jelly is a valid scientific tool:

I like the way the woman with the jelly baby had the tube pointing at her face! I think she needed more than safety specs.
Re: I really do not understand!!!:(
One of the teachers at my school used jelly and other stuff to explain something about the layers under the earth's crust, with cotinents floating in it. The problem was she left it in the staffroom until it was growing a delightful layer of multi-coloured mould. It could nearly have walked to the bin by itself by the time she cleared it up!
