To paraphrase a famous quote made about Wagner*, Proust has great stories, but terribly dull chapters. :)

Interesting - after a few minutes research, I could well see "In Search of Lost Time" as a good title for an early Torchwood novel.

Was it the Monty Python troupe who did a 'summarise Proust' sketch, or was it someone else?
Perhaps you could try try David Bader's haiku:

oh, and I'm reading Terry Pratchett (and really looking forward to spending the book tokens I'm getting for my birthday - Sigur suggested I ask for them, so I guess he doesn't think I've got enough books after all!

I keep forgetting about this thread, but i've just finished reading:

Catching Fire - Book 2 of The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins.

The two stars are still 16 going on 17 but with more horror and pain than people 5 times their age. Some very nice touches in here that adds media and political manipulation into the scathing analysis of 'reality TV' and 'celeb culture', with the odd revolution along the way.

A couple of scenes caught me totally off guard - which is nice to fnd... the odd 'surprise' along the way.

I also enjoyed reading "Cat & Mouse" by alzzu - another Potter fanfic. More of a detective thriller than magical adventure, set 5 years after the Battle of Hogwarts.

I've forgotten what is next on my shelf - I'll find out tomorrow ;)

Really ought to update this thread more often since I'm reading quite a bit at the moment (got to do something while feeding Thomas, after all!).
Been reading lots of Terry Pratchett, and currently on Nation, which isn't a discworld novel. Am so far enjoying it and looking forward to seeing how it develops.
Also managed to track down a copy of Gentian Hill by Elizabeth Goudge - an old favourite of mine that got lost somewhere in Wulfruna's various house moves.

I've also got enough Waterstones vouchers left for 2 more books and am looking for suggestions! Really don't want to get anything that's part of a series as I won't be able to buy any more unless I'm lucky and catch them cheap on ebay. Definitely want books that are easy to hold in one hand though! (so not ones only available in trade or hard back).
Any suggestions??

Erian's post has made me think, would anyone be interested in starting up a book swap? I've go a stack of books that are waiting to go to the charity shop (they could probably still end up in a charity shop after they've been passed around a few times). What does everyone else think?

I would Maisie but I've just packed up my latest load of light reading and taken them to the charity shop unfortunately.

I've only just spotted that Pride and Prejudice link. I wonder if Kingsley has seen it. (She's currently doing coursework on PAP ....as she calls it)

I've just noticed that my little flower pic says I'm currently reading 'Jane Eyre - again'. Which is technically true, but I've read about 20 books since then and come back around to Jane Eyre yet again. This will be followed by the Secret Garden, because I re-read that every spring when the bulbs are all starting to come up.

I've also discovered fan fiction. That was a bad move. I did nothing useful over half-term, just spent hours and hours reading fan fiction on the internet.

Have you also read The Painted Garden by Noel Streatfield? It's about making a film of the Secret Garden. (and some of the Fossils from Ballet Shoes come into it too. :D ) It was one of my favourite books as a child.

Laughing out loud at this  It's HP FanFiction for me (and a certain long-necked member). There is some excellent writing out there, isn't there?

Glad this got bumped up I haven't been updating my reading matter recently either.

My daughter gave me some books recently by Harlen Coben, all very readable, the type of book you want to keep reading just to see what happens next.

Yeah, but embarassingly, the thing I'm obsessed with is Ballykissangel. Do you remember it from the '90s? There are rather a lot of people out there who were NOT happy about the fact that Assumpta died and she and Peter didn't get a happy ending, so they wrote their own. There are some that are 60,000 words long! That's six times the length of the dissertation I wrote for my degree. And definitely more than I read in research!

It's also led to a new obsession with 'Goodnight Sweetheart'. Someone's posted every single episode on Youtube. I've watched all of the first 2 series in about 4 days. I need to get a life!!!

I just finished "No Time For Goodbye" by Linwood Barclay. It is a thriller, but IMHO very well written. He somehow manages to build tension without giving much away for about the first half of the book! Generally plausible but exciting. This is not my normal choice of genre, however, I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Apart from the fan-fiction (Re-reading the series that started with Harry Potter and the Refiner's Fire), I'm reading...

Johnny Mackintosh and the Spirit of London - by Keith Mansfield.
The tag-line of "Alex Rider meets Doctor Who" was designed to catch my interest - and the use of a certain tower in London as being the design for a space ship gave me a laugh that the author did not intend ;)

A 13-year old male lead, with a sister - might be one for Fernando at some point.

The Medici Secret - by Michael White
Clues scattered through the centuries and across Venice (and the surrounds). Lots of famous historical characters worked in. The story keeps rolling along, but it jumps around between dates and locations a great deal...think I need to get to the conclusion to see how much I've enjoyed it.

Both those finished now (I was well through them when I posted them here), and rattled through James Patterson's second book in the Daniel X series.

So now I'm reading...

White Witch, Black Curse (Rachel Morgan, book 7) by Kim Harrison - a favourite series that is progressing the story arc and regularly making me laugh along the action-packed way.

Gold Strike by Matt Whyman - another teen author that I've enjoyed in the past. This one has a teenage cyber-hacker in the centre.... just read a few pages, so can't say more at the moment.

On an 'online' basis, I finally remembered that I hadn't finished James Potter and the Hall of Elders' Crossing by G, Norman Lippert - so I've JUST finished that off (and enjoyed how the old characters have progressed). After closing that file I have just opened up the other file titled James Potter and the Curse of the Gatekeeper :D
