Re: I really do not understand!!!:(
i remember a similar experiment to the jellybaby one at high school
the teacher showed us a method that railroad workers fused to rails together
iron powder + oxidizer ...
and by showed i mean he sat the ceramic flask on the wooden bench in the middle of the cramped room stuck a piece of magnesium in it as a fuse and stepped back several places.....
and to think i used to wonder why the desk i sat at had burn makes on it.....

I liked the sodium and calcium experiments, dropped on water. We collected the hydrogen in a test tube as well, and then let the buncen flame "lick" into it, making a loud "pop".

Yuk!! One of our science teachers picked up a cup which was growing fungus in it and started to culture it to see how it would end up - with the idea to shame the maths teacher who had left it lying around. Unfortunately, the health and safety dragon found out and insisted on having the cup "safely disposed of" in clinical waste!! She said it was a hazard to the pupils' health.Laura wrote:One of the teachers at my school used jelly and other stuff to explain something about the layers under the earth's crust, with cotinents floating in it. The problem was she left it in the staffroom until it was growing a delightful layer of multi-coloured mould. It could nearly have walked to the bin by itself by the time she cleared it up!
I'd dearly like to be able to look at all your youtube links, sadly I'm back to the carpy work laptop without administrator's rights, so I can't watch them.

Well, I have been wondering for some time what on earth it could be that Bunny is supposed to be teaching - and wishing that there were more such free-wheeling people in our schools
The question still remains... but she obviously needs to keep up the good work!

I took the massive decision to move my youngest son to a new school last June. He was about to enter GCSE's so it was quite late. Having the right teachers for your child is sOOOOO important. He loves school now, has loads of friends and just got AAA A* in his science and maths modules.
It is lovely to see how much effort you teachers are putting into your lessons. I think I would even have enjoyed school with your experiments. In our day it was more blow up the science lab when you were not suppose to be on it.

Re: I really do not understand!!!:(
our physics teacher managed to electrocute himself - luckily it just threw him across the classroom - he said 'jeepers creepers' and got up... (much respect for his self-control in the face of a roomful of girls!) This was the chap who also shot himself in the foot with an airpistol while demonstrating the speed of sound...
Unfortunately I think a lot of the better experiments are no longer allowed due to health and safety. Mind you, I've a friend who works at a Special Needs school (this is one where the police are called when a pupil goes missing...) who can get away with blowing things up and making lots of smells and things during her science lessons, but then, it does make her one of the more popular teachers there!

Our science techers tended to be 'unusual', but nothing like that.

I've finally got the real computer to work
(probably temporarily) and got to look at the marvellous links!! Good finds!
I also love the sound of Eirian's teacher!
Obviously, I'm sorry he got hurt but let's face it, it's things like that the kids REALLY remember. I am famous for having a gigantic telly fall on my head at school.* The year sevens who witnessed it are now year 10s, and they still reminisce!! Actually I have entered the accident book again today, having tripped spectacularly on a carelessly left bag. I was carrying a heavy bag and a folder, and did one of those slow motion comedy stunt a over t routines, realised in mid air that I was about to hit my head on a chair, twisted and landed on the top of my kneecap. OUCH.
*and yes, I know that explains a lot.

I'm now hobbling around like an 80 year old.
I'm supposed to be away for the weekend too! I'm going away with "the girls" as we optimistically call ourselves (they're all as old as me).

People just don't have the same self control these dayseirian wrote:our physics teacher managed to electrocute himself - luckily it just threw him across the classroom - he said 'jeepers creepers' and got up...
Another excample:
When I think of my great aunt (Now approaching her 98th birthday) it is of her poise as she got up out of a chair one evening to take the tea cups into the kitchen. As she stood up her skirt fell round her ankles, she said " Ooooh errr!" , stepped out of her skirt and took the cups out wearing just her petticoat.
(The time my trousers fell down on the doorstep I was mortified and totally flustered! But that's another story

A story that MUST be told I think
Kingsley.... Fernando????

Re: I really do not understand!!!:(
Absolutely no idea MBH! This one is news to me too!
Re: I really do not understand!!!:(
Unfortunately one of my daughters had a teacher who was explaining how you had to be so careful with bromide (or some other substance that sounds similar) and he dropped it!!. He had to go to hospital and the class had to be medically assessed for the afternoon. I really felt quite sorry for him but quite alarmed.!! I expect any chemistry teachers will know the actual substance I have probably used the wrong name.
Re: I really do not understand!!!:(
I still have a scar about 1x1.5 ins on my hand from where I had liquid bromine dropped on me over 40 years ago
There's no point in having a last minute if you don't use it!

Hi everyone
I would just like to say what a helpful bunch of people you are. When I posted this original notice I also posted it on the OU forum as I felt that with all these people studying Business someone would be able to help me. I didn't get one reply. From your replies I really feel I understand now and learnt a lot more about teaching and jelly too!!
Regards
Paula

It's amazing what you learn as a puzzler isn't it. Does jelly qualify for mastermind?
Someone should seriously consider puzzles as a modern day teaching method.
