I'll tell story first and then see if anyone can help.
Last Friday (day before his 7th birthday party) my grandson was playing at this friend's house on the Wii while friend's mother watched. H got excited and the controller flew out his hand and smashed the glass in front of tv screen. (a 55 ins. Sony all singing/all dancing) Poor H put his hands over his face and started shaking. The poor mother thought he was going to pass out and when my daughter arrived all she could do was apologise and get H home. She phoned later that night to apologise again and asked what they were going to do. The outcome is they have contacted their insurance company and the tv has gone for repair(hopefully). My daughter has offered to pay the excess on her insurance but is not sure what else she can do. The woman accepts that it was an accident and could have happened to her son - he was actually caught on Sunday playing the Wii without the wrist strap on!!
H has written a letter to say sorry and handed that in.
Does anyone know if this type of tv can be repaired. After the glass broke the tv still worked and had a picture but we don't know if the glass is part of the screen and can be replaced. What else can my daughter do as she cannot afford a new tv? What would you have done if it was your tv?

Poor little boy, that must have been pretty frightening for him.
I know nothing about such TV's but, for what my opinion is worth, I think an offer to pay the excess on an insurance claim is a perfectly good response. As the mother said, accidents happen and it was just fate that it was your grandson and not her own little boy who did it.
If it had been my TV I would have said the same as she did, and would probably have tried not to accept the offer to pay.

I agree with LAT absolutely. If it was my TV I'd just have thought it was one of those things. That's what insurance is for. And presumably if the glass can't be fixed then they should surely get a new telly from the insurance company? The offer of paying the excess is quite generous, I would have said; tell her to stop worrying about it.

You're only given a little spark of madness. You mustn't lose it.

Thank you for your comments. I was just not sure what else my daughter could do. At least the mother is being very reasonable about it and accepts it could just as easily have been her son.

Daniel dropped his mums ipod touch on a tiled floor and smashed the screen on it. The same thing happened to his friends mum. The difference between them was that my daughter sent hers for repair and got a new one for the price of the screen. Her friend bought a screen for £6 on google and tried to replace it herself. Her's ended up completely beyond repair.
With a reasonable mum on the other side then I'm sure there will be a compromise solution. Poor H.
