What to wear

We have been invited to York Races in July. Some clients of OH have a box and I don't want to look stupid!

Has anyone been to York races? The racecourse website says dress for a smart wedding!!!! Do people really dress like that apart from Royal Ascot? I don't want to splash out on a posh frock and then find I'm horribly overdressed.

We're in the Knavesmire stand , which seems to be part of the County stand, which I gather is the posh end. :?

Any advice?

Well I have been racing before, Warwick in the summer, and it was the wettest day I can remember. Even with raincoats and umbrellas we were soaked to the skin!

Sorry, never been to a race of any description (well apart from a snail race which I organised for the local primary school  ). I didn't have to dress up for that...

My husband was there earlier this month in the County stand and says that some women do indeed dress as for a wedding. You would be unlikely to be overdressed in a posh frock. Have fun!

not possible to go with something elegant/simple that you can use accessories to make that little bit special if it is but is "summery" enough to pull off with out the accessories?

oh and york races is great cant really remeber what everyone wore when i went but the bar was brillient ;-) and i think i even bet on a race...... ;-)

Still not sure whether this is any help, but some friends have just been to York races and I've seen the pictures. They seem to have worn a whole range of stuff, from jeans and t-shirt , to open-necked shirts with no ties, to trousers and pretty top, but they were just sitting on the grass and not in a box or a stand, so I expect the dress code would be far more relaxed where they were.

I spent this morning trudging round the shops. The shops I had specifically gone for had both closed down :( (Mind you it is 4 or 5 years since I last went shopping in that particular town)

I bought a dress in the end, I'm not hugely sure about it, but on the plus side it was reduced :D and they say I can take it back within 28 days if I change my mind.

It might take me a while to recover from the trauma of going shopping! :?

It IS traumatic, clothes shopping, isn't it? I usually come home feeling suicidal.

When I got back to the shop (where I bought the dress) for round 2 of trying on and dithering, the shop assistant greeted me with "You look like you've reached the totallly fed up stage" Didn't like to tell her I felt like lying on the floor and crying!

You know, the thing to do is to take a girl friend with you. Then they make you try on things which you might not think of, and hopefully encourage you. It's definitely preferable to take a large friend so that you don't feel bad in the changing room!! :D

Any volunteers to be a girlfriend in Guildford on Saturday afternoon? I think I have the outfit and hat but need a jacket or smart shawl to go over sleeveless top for daughter's graduation ("hats may be worn" !!) next thursday plus secondary duty for a wedding in August.

Of course if you are careful with it you could always take it back after the races giraffe ;)

I'm too honest for that!

How did your daughter do in her degree? Did you post it and I missed it?

Most of my friends are stick insects, or have totally different taste to me. I really wanted someone with me this morning, but couldn't think of anyone who would give the right sort of encouragement / not be fed up at my dithering/ not be shocked at the size I need. :( The only one I could think of has three children aged 4 years to 7weeks , so I didn't think she would be free. ;)

Don't know what Kate got yet. She finds out on Saturday. (insert nail biting smiley here!)

Yes, I can imagine that friend probably had a few things to do. Do the family approve of your purchase?

Lally likes it because it's lilac!

OH says it looks great on the hangar  (He hasn't seen it on me yet, so is reserving judgement)

Is that why LAT asked me to go to Guildford with her on Saturday when I bumped into her today?....and yes I am free if you want me to go with you :D
