Re: Clever s*ds - help required please!!
Cool, thank you very much. I've never had a formal lesson to use Excel in my life so it's always guesswork. I have given up trying to use Microsoft help which I can honestly say has NEVER successfully helped me in any way.
This is such a useful thing for puzzle making!

Re: Clever s*ds - help required please!!
At the top of my screen I have a toolbar that says:
File Edit View Favourites Tools Help
and underneath there is a picture of a house, and envelope, a printer and the words Page, Safety, Tools
I'm sure it all used to be on one line, but now it is on two lines, which takes up more of the screen. Does anyone know how to get it all on one line?

You can get rid of a row by right clicking in an empty space along the toolbars and unticking the row you don't want but I don't know how to get them all on one line.
You can also customise the second row and add or remove icons you do/don't want.

Re: Clever s*ds - help required please!!
Just be careful with the sort area. Make sure it sorts all the items and lines you want and doesn't leave part of the layout untouched, nor affect areas you want to be left alone. Empty cells, header rows (or columns) and the selection area you have picked may all possibly lead to the sort coming out unexpectedly. It tries hard to allow for what it thinks you would expect, but double check it did realise what you meant.

Re: Clever s*ds - help required please!!
Thank you, gentlemen (and lady!) You're all so helpful. And I'm SO useless at reading instructions and making any sense of them. I think the problem is that most information I find assumes knowledge or understanding that I don't have. I need an idiot's guide for stupid people who don't understand computers! *
*Although, to be fair, SparkOut already knows that. He's had experience of trying to talk me through installing something on the PC whilst I'm in the process of panicking that I'm going to break it.

Re: Clever s*ds - help required please!!
That's why I tend to advise people to write down their own set of instructions after they figure out how to do something, because (a) that tends to help it get lodged in the longer-term memory and (b) your own gibberish has a chance of making sense to you, whereas someone else's gibberish rarely does. (Not that this is helpful for something that you do only once in a blue moon, because even your own gibberish may be meaningless when you come back to it!)
Never put off till tomorrow what you can do the day after tomorrow.

The problem is that I can never find my own gibberish when I need it!

I'm never at a loss for gibberish. If I can't remember, I just make some more up on the spot.

Re: Clever s*ds - help required please!!
OK lovely people, here is the ultimate challenge. You've helped before with this kind of thing so I'm going to up the ante for the challenge.
I've just had a message from my son...
"Can you think of a short, catchy title for something I'm writing please? The strapline / descriptive title will be "Fission yeast as a model to study ageing and age-related biological phenomena" but I want a nice brief catchy bit to put above it in big letters. Fission yeast's Latin name is schzoscaaharo myces pombe and I'll be talking about lifespan, cellular ageing, prions and neurodegeneration. Any ideas? lol"
HELP!!

Re: Clever s*ds - help required please!!
For a while now I haven't been able to open pdf thingys in Internet explorer. It doesn't usually matter, because I just copy the page address thing into chrome and read them there. But I have just bought some travel insurance for Fernando and it has sent me the documents as a pdf. It said they would be emailed, but it just came up after I paid. It won't copy into chrome probably because of the payment details, it just tells me the page has expired.
So does anyone have any ideas why I can't read pdf s and whether there is some adjustment I can make to settings on my laptop.
