My phone's died

I found my mobile floating in a load of water which someone (mentioning no names, but I suspect he's 6'4" and 19) left all over the kitchen work surface.

I've had it in the airing cupboard overnight and it's still dead. Now here's the thing: I've lost all my contact details, so now don't have anyone's phone number. Which, as you can imagine, is really distressing me.

PLEASE folks, if I already had your number, would you pm me with it please? *As soon as I've sorted something out I'll send you all a text to confirm my new number (if that's what I need).

* And if there's anyone else out there who is mad enough to want to share their number with me that I don't already have, that's cool too - I'm not a phone menace who texts every 30 seconds, but sometimes the odd one, a "well done" or "happy birthday" or ludicrous photo is fun to share**).

I've had loo droppings in the past. If you phone stores your numbers on the card, you can get a really cheap thing (man tool that I don't know the name for) that hooks up to your computer and you can get the numbers off it. They are handy for storing the numbers anyway, so we have one just to back up those long lists of numbers that were important 10 years ago that we may need to use one more time in the distant future. It is also realy handy if you change companies or sim cards to transfer old numbers to the new card.

Yup - a SIM card reader is a very useful tool.
I've got an all-in-one card reader that handles memory cards from my digital cameras and MP3 player as well.

I can't help but think you're laughing at me I didn't know what it was called because like yours it does the sim cards, the camera cards-2 different sizes, and the little data cards that plug into the back of the NDS and the one in my phone.

Is sim card reader the general word for an all in one thing? That is a serious question by the way.

No, the SIM card is just the phone bit. But it's easier for the marketing people to sell two separate devices (and more profitable )

So it's really just called a card reader - but if you want it to read SIMs you can't just get a regular one (which tends to only handle the PC-type cards.)

I've had a phone connection lead and memory stick put through the washing machine for me (inside a coat pocket). [I've done data cleansing in the past - but not like that ]

Following advice on the internet I let both air-dry until TOTALLY dry, and they are both still in use.

I can imagine the phone being dead - but if your numbers are stored on a removable data card then that may well be fine. I keep reminding myself to shift photographs on to the 'date stick' area as the phone calls it as I once needed my phone 'reset' which wiped everything out of the phone memory.

K's phone went through the washing machine. (Left in school skirt pocket) It still works fine. I put it in the airing cupboard for a few days, but the battery doesn't hold much charge any more. I assume you've tried charging it?

It just does nothing.

But the good news is that I've managed to rescue the sim card and find an old phone to put it in. Trouble is most of my contacts were on the phone rather than the sim. So still needing those numbers folks. (Thank you to those who have got back).
