My two grandsons have just passed their grade 1 ukelele exams with 97% and 96%. They are 12 and 9.

Yeah, but are they any good at the bagpipes? Enquiring minds want to know. :D

You won't have to sing for long, if you're hoping for bagpipe accompaniment. I only have one set now, the old leaky bag ones have gone to play with the haggises on the great heather-clad mountain. The other set is still hard to blow, and I haven't played them for ages so a couple of bars of Amazing Grace is all I could manage.

I suspect that's about all most people would want. :)

(I do quite like bagpipes but they are one of those instruments that you don't really want to be around people playing them who aren't really good. Especially not more than one.)

When it was D's Mum's funeral (at the crematorium) my mad brother in law and I happened to spot a bagpipe player who was just leaving after another funeral. We managed to slip him a tenner and he played Amazing Grace as Jean's coffin was taken into the crematorium. This was a surprise for everyone else, and was therefore quite an emotional moment. especially as they are proud Scots. So on that occasion the bagpipes brought tears for the right reasons!

I have to say, I think my ukulele playing may also bring tears, but for a different reason!

On a lighter note, however, we could always get my daughter (the one in the Santa hat) and her friend to join us? https://www.facebook.com/katherine.elli ... =2&theater

Bagpipes are great, but they need to be played on top of a mountain to be appreciated, and preferably listened to from the top of the next mountain. Definitely not an urban instrument.

Kingsley is having a soprano sax for Christmas, and I might feel the same about that by boxing day!

Oh my word, Giraffe, do you realise what you are letting yourself in for? When we gave K an alto sax for Christmas (about 12 years ago now) it seemed like SUCH a good idea. Until, that is, she started blowing it in the living room and it sounded like a cow in labour. She's now grade 8 and it sounds lovely. Well, as long as she doesn't play it in my living room, that is.

Although I have to say it was very funny last year because we decided to buy them both a melodica each. They had fantastic fun on Christmas day working out Christmas duets.

She's been past grade 8 on tenor sax for the last 6 years , but she needs alto and soprano for a pit band she is in in January. We are borrowing the alto from a friend, but another friend had a soprano for sale, and as it was a good instrument at a reasonable price it seemed like the time to buy.

Now when Fernando had alto sax lessons (aged 10) that WAS like a cow in labour!
