before i forget heres a copy of the letter ive written ps everything in [square brackets] is me making this non specific

[my address]
[date]
[york address]
Dear [manager at york]:

Please regard this as an application for the position of night supervisor that was recently advertised within the Stockton branch.

Based on the requirements stated in the ad, I believe that I possess a unique mix of experience, knowledge, and skills that can help fulfil the needs of the job.

Experience, skills, and abilities that I can offer include:
12 years of experience within a warehouse environment , nearly 5 of those with Menzies at the Stockton branch
since starting with Menzies I have repeatedly shown my responsible nature including
receiving goods and maintaining a presence within the warehouse whilst alone
more recently being responsible for the Saturday afternoon shift
answering phones and covering the cage whilst Steve is unavailable
willing to arrive early and stay late at short notice or on my own initiative
Excellent grasp of basic computer systems, as well as a familiarity with the PBL system
Ability to work effectively on own initiative or as part of a team environment

I am confident that my ability to develop and maintain my skills and abilities as I have already within the Stockton branch. I believe that my excellent record of attendance and time keeping as well as my general willingness to assist others, clearly demonstrates my proven ability to meet and resolve challenges.

I would welcome an opportunity to discuss talk to you about the position available.

Sincerely,

[my name]

If I were you I'd include a CV anyway, Clvrlad. Then they have all the details in front of them - they may not know about your qualifications, for example, or any other specifically relevant experience. Don't forget that there will be a lot of applications for a job like this, esepecially in the current economic climate. It is usual to make a job application letter fairly brief and to the point, and then have separate information on your CV and, if necessary a separate sheet with relevant skills and abilities.

Well, that's how they used to do it when I worked in that line - but remember that was 22 years ago so things may have moved on   . Clearly after all that time I can no longer claim to be any kind of an expert in this field.

When does this have to be in by? Is there a closing date? I liked a lot of what you had in your letter but if I'm honest it could do with a bit more punctuation. I'm happy to look at it and stick my twopenneth in if you want, but I have a bit of a busy weekend. PM me if you want me to have a fiddle and see what I can do.*

*And no, not that kind of fiddle.

well i was about to put it in an envelope and post it it needs to be there by wednesday.
ive printed it at work since i dont have a printer and i cant really print it monday or tuesday since im not in charge except on a saturday what do you mean thats cheating :-D
The guy im sending it to knows me so i think that might jusy colour his opinion since it seems to be only advertised at this branch and only to the guys on the night shift i doubt theres a significant number of letters going in
the facts im one of the few non supervisors who receives resposibility pay and im a trained forklift truck driver and understand how the computerised packing process works means ive a head start on most who apply for it.
normally iwouldnt even consider it but looking at the guys around me, ive noticed its the lazy B*&&%*s who are sending letters off

oh and did i mention im in a non yorkshirte branch and the guy who were sending it to is from leeds.....
home town advantage or what :-D

Initial comment - you don't need both "discuss" and "talk to you about" EDIT - if you have already printed it out just put a / between discuss and talk.

You might want to make a comment about no commitments which would stop you from working nights as they are not going to want someone who hasn't thought through what night supervisor means in terms of a private life. if it is too late to add this then try to mention it if and when you get called for interview.

But best of luck, hope you get it! :D

Looks good - but I agree that's it's good to have a CV up your sleeve as well.

oh i do have one as well but having seen the process when other people have been promoted with my company having your face fit is much more important than what's written on a piece of paper
the guy whos seems to be in charge of this, ie the guy ive written my application to, seems to have his head screwed on right
mind he is a Yorkshire man so im going to get marked up or down for being one too ;-)

something a bit strange to report
happened to see the guy this morning who id sent my application to, so i asked if hed received it yet; he works in branches all over our cell so not an unreasonable question specially, since by my reckoning its a been a week.
he's response was "err no i was in York Friday and didn't see anything"
apparently even though the advert says to post it the others gave them to our branch manager and he received those but the one id posted the week b4 had gone missing
luckily since i posted it on here it was easy enough to give him a quick copy of it 2mins later...
so im waiting to hear again...

Best of luck to you - and what a great time for an interview :D Most people would figure that was a mis-print, but we know your odd hours.
