Re: I'm Busy Reading....
I've probably read a dozen book since I last updated this - but as I'm returning the lastest Torchwood book I thought I'd share this line that made me smile:
Following the Opera Karaoe starting up and Jack Harkness commenting on it the bad guy says
"Well, life's not all party favours and Kylie - and it's a touch of class. It's not show tunes"
Jack: "I've never been a fan of musical theatre."
Well - it made me laugh

Re: I'm Busy Reading....
I couldn't think of anyone MORE likely to be a fan of Kylie and musical theatre (and probably Judy Garland as well) if he fits into the stereotype!! However, as a gay friend of mine pointed out "you know, what people don't understand is that I CAN be gay and still like heavy metal. And to be honest, the idea of interior decor is about as interesting to me as watching paint dry!!" ( I have to add that he did then wink at me with his gorgeous big brown cow eyes with long lashes, and mince off to go and find out the latest gossip... )

The Summer Reading Challenge in the Libraries this year is "Space Hop" - and I've just been checking the website:

The personality test (which links you to a planet in the solar system) tells me I'm linked with:

Then it lists a set of books that might appeal to me - and a couple do In fact "Cosmic" by Frank Cottrell Boyce I've already read...URANUS - OK, with a name like this you've got to have a sense of humour, right? Uranus has taken it's share of knocks including a huge collision at some stage in it's history that this planet now spins on it's side. Now that is funny....
Humour: You've got a naughty, mischievious streak and there is nothing you like more than to make others laugh. When it comes to reading, you like more of the same! Giggle your way through these

Re: I'm Busy Reading....
OK finally finished "The Reader" Bernard Schink. Strange book, not bad, rather disturbing in many ways, very odd subject matter!! Has anyone seen the film? I haven't (apparently Kate Winslet won an award for it) and wondered what it was like as a film?

Re: I'm Busy Reading....
Now on Lustrum by Robert Harris ( I recently read "Ghost" which I would definitely recommend). So having said I couldn't remember any Latin, I'm now learning bits all over again - it's set in Rome 63BC. Good so far but probably won't have any time to read it now.

I read Ghost and thought it was ok, not sure why I didn't feel it was quite there for me, wish I could put my finger on it.
Currently reading Moonheart by Charles de Lint. I just love his mixing of the myth with the real and this, being the first of his I found, is still my favourite.
(also reading Tom Holt's Alexander (there's more to that title, but it's upstairs) which is one of his greek tales, which I much prefer to his version of the myth in today's world)

Re: I'm Busy Reading....
Well, I'm currently reading the most bizarre book I've read in a long time, and even more strangely, it's The Wind in the Willows. It's one of those that I never read as a child, and always thought I ought to have read it, so when someone else was going to chuck it out, I claimed it as my own (which is why I have to have a wrestling match with my bookcase if I want to get anything out of it, they're crammed in so tightly).
But, seriously, going by the illustrations, a mole, toad, and a water-rat are the same size, roughly half the size of humans, horses, and badgers. The toad drives a human sized car. The mole lives underground, yet has a goldfish pond in the underground garden. I'm ever so baffled!!!
On a side-note, I'm currently watching, on ITV3, repeats of Monarch of the Glen, so all the characters in WITW (in my head, at least), talk like Richard Briers and Julian Fellowes!!!!! HELP!!!!

Re: I'm Busy Reading....
You're reading a bizarre book? I've just managed to force my way throuh The Colour of Magic in a double-bill with The Light Fantastic. I'm sorry to say that if the two stories weren't in the single book I probably wouldn't have gone looking for the second one
As I suspected this was on the same level as Monty Python or Viz - I got a couple of chuckles out of it, but sooooo much silliness [I know - that probably alienates me from half my 'mates' on here ]
I'll plough on and read the second one, but if the art of storytelling is to make you care about the characters then following the 'cliffhanger' at the end of the first book - I really couldn't care less what happened to them.
Sorry

Re: I'm Busy Reading....
Well that would be why we told you to start with Mort! The first two aren't representative examples at all, The Colour of Magic especially, which is more of a set of parodies of other fantasy fiction than any sort of novel. The Light Fantastic is somewhat more coherent, but - as you say - far too silly for the most part.
Never put off till tomorrow what you can do the day after tomorrow.

Re: I'm Busy Reading....
Still ongoing with Light Fantatic, but for my 'online' reading I've just finished (and enjoyed) this;
http://www.harrypotterfanfiction.com/vi ... sid=242961
Harry Potter & The New Marauders by BKL8008
Some nice ideas along the way, well written, and it made me laugh at the right points (always a good sign)

Re: I'm Busy Reading....
I received a book this week from a readitswapit member with a sticker in it for the bookcrossing website. Where you can register your books get a number and them see where they end up when you release them into the "wild". Didn't know if anyone has done this. My book started off in Plymouth, went to Gloucester and is back in Devon again with me!
I don't have hot flushes. I have short holidays in the Tropics.

Re: I'm Busy Reading....
On the HP Fanfiction style of reading, quite a few. Some I've been pointed to by other readers on here - others I've found myself.
There are a few 'books' I started that I found had not been completed - which is disappointing So I'm careful now to check the 'status' of the books before I get engrossed.
Tell me some you're read, and I'll tell you others that I've found. Do you like the existing characters? Next Generation?? Any particular 'relationships'???
