Re: Today I've mostly bin...the barriers

#3862 Post by tricia » Tue Sep 28, 2010 8:44 pm

Today or should that be this evening I have been waiting......waiting........and waiting for a train.

My sister and I share a house so after work I usually pick her up from the train station and we do the shopping. Hpwever the train was delayed because someone had decided to comit suicide! They put barriers on the line and apparantly placed themselves between them.

Typically my battery in my phone was dead, and the only way to contact her was to go home and phone from there. She was actually in the first carriage of the train that hit the person. She said everyone felt the impact between the body and the barriers. They also thought the train would go over, fortunately it did not. The police arived and obviously the scene was a crime scene and noone was allowed off the train and the train was not allowed into the station. BR staff, I could see were frantically trying to organise buses for all these affected by the delays.

I know that poeple who comit suicide are desperate BUT I do wish they would not do so by throwing themselves under a train. I just keep thinking of the drivier - how does he get over something over which he had absolute contol.

Anyway she finally got off the train two and a half hous later and is now watching masterchef whilt I am on talking to you, and Olly is currently sitting on her lap purring his head off

Oh your poor sister! I hope she's not traumatised. A colleague of my husband seems to make a habit of being delayed on the trains by "a jumper". It's almost become a standing joke.

I quite agree with you Tricia. Although I can understand why people might reach a point when they feel that they don't want to continue, and to an extent believe that should be a person's prerogative, it is IMHO unforgiveable to involve anyone else in that process. Especially a total stranger who is just doing his job. Yes, as you say, total desperation, but also total selfishness.

Anyway (back off soap box)
...being accused of being a "terrifying". I am, by nature, the kind of person who prefers to encourage / praise people rather than punish or criticise them. As a consequence, a lot of kids at school seem to quite like me, and I don't think I'd be blowing my own trumpet too much to say I get on with most people. I rarely shout. However, today, some kids were just being plain rude to one of my new members of staff (who was trying really hard to help them, and they didn't want to know). I just saw red. So instead of SHOUTING at them, I WHISPERED at them. It totally freaked them out.

After they'd shut up and apologised, I stalked off. The member of staff came and found me later, and commented
"That was one of the most terrifying things I've ever seen".

It's a bit of a worry that I'm PROUD of being called "terrifying", isn't it?

.... having my first 'working' visit to the dentist and getting a tooth extracted :(

I'll be there for the next 4 Tuesday afternoons as well as she works her way around the wreck that is my mouth. At least 2 other extractions and some filling work - then a re-making of my denture plate (that currently fills in about half my upper set).

I would have typed this earlier, but after the numbness left I had a painkiller about 9pm that knocked me out - I just woke up after midnight.

EDIT: Just checked your link clvrlad - nice to see a local rabbit (to me) on the top of the list

Glad to see so many of my relatives have made it to that hall of fame, Clvrlad! I always thought that the Donny Darko rabbit, for some reason, is absolutely terrifying (and bizarre). It sort of shouldn't be, if you know what I mean, but is. A bit like me.

And ouch, poor you MBH. Hope it feels better soon. 4 weeks of dental treatment isn't very nice to look forward to. x

OK keep fat tonight was interesting. The teacher had us doing ZUMBA. No I hadn't heard of it either. It seemed to consist of a kind of fusion of Latin dancing, belly dancing, and all kinds of random moves (well, REALLY random in my case because I am so uncoordinated...). The most bizarre one was when she said "You now need to pretend you are sh**ging a pole" I must admit it did look REALLY funny with about 50 women (and one man) doing that particular move...it made doing the moves even worse because we were all cracked up laughing...

Just got back from the gym. (Spectating of course  You didn't expect me to be doing keep fit did you? )

On Wednesday nights Lally's gym club train at the National Sports Centre, where they have world class facilities. Anyway tonight they were asked if they would mind sharing the gym with the British Gymnastics Team. So I've spent the evening watching Beth Tweddle and her chums somersaulting and cartwheeling round the gym. After they had finished Beth very kindly signed autographs and had her picture taken with the children.

What was the matter - could she not say Czechoslovakian?

Sounds like you had fun - laughter is excellent exercise.

Great story from Giraffe - Lally just have been inspired sharing a gym with them :)

It was quite funny really. A row of five or six beams, three with gymnasts training for the World Championships and one with a six year old having her first attempt at doing a handstand on the beam.

There were a lot of very excited young gymnasts, lets hope it inspires them to work hard.

How nice for Lally! :D And as you say, quite inspiring too I'd have thought.

Oh and best of luck to MBH for all the dental work. I had lots of visits when I was younger and my front teeth met a hockey stick in a games lesson at school.

Wow Giraffe! That was a really inspirational evening, wasn't it? Lovely picture too. :D

And yes, Eirian, it is a particularly distressing mental image isn't it? It was even worse in real life...

Keeping the keep fat theme going I've been inspired this week. Another result of my new found life. On Saturday evening I was talking to a girl who has lost 50lbs since March. She swims twice at weekends and walks twice a week at home. I've done 40 lengths of our pool ( which is about half sized) every morning since. I'm knackered but invigorated. I've just been to a car boot sale type market and bought an ab cruncher for £2 (brand new boxed) that you can use in front of the tv and have already done twice the recommended plan for day 1 and bought a pedometer which has yet to tell me how little walking I usually do when at home with a car. I'm so knackered I cant be bothered to go to the pub so less alcohol too.

If haven't lost at least 3lbs or a notch off my belt by the time I get home on Tuesday the word exercise is going to become a none word in my vocabulary.
