Our road has started to thaw, but that has made it even slippier. I got to the end of our side road, only one house to pass, so I didn't get up any speed, put my foot on the brake and sailed out into the path of an oncoming landrover! Fortunately he was going even slower and his bit of road was less icy, so he stopped.

This probably should be the "Today.." thread, but it's more appropriate here.

Finally managed to get to the shed to get the ladders out, and climb onto the flat roof. Shovelled off the 3-inch ince slab topped by 12 inches of snow. I'm happy with heights, but shovelling heavy snow and ice while slippy underfoot and about 12-foot off the ground is a bit of a 'buzzzzz'

The reason for getting up there was to get down the hanging guttering before the wind gets up to start flailing it around (possible doing more damage). The gutters that do remain are solid with ice that is now slowly thawing out. I'm typing this in time with the tap-tap-tap of drops of water hitting outside the window from the cracked gutter over the front door

The main roads are clear, but all the side roads are thick compacted snow. The local BBC Radio station is taking credit for getting a council gritting team out to help fire engines get to a house fire in the middle of an estate.

Finally managed to get my car out on the road today,t hanks for some rain yesterday afternoon and temps not dropping below freezing last night. The lanes are still iffy with slush and frozen snow but there is some tarmac showing through but I managed to negotiate them.

The snow has virtually completely gone from the garden but the road outside our house is still slightly icy/slippery.

We have no snow or ice or anything left. And it's a lot milder now. I've just been out walking (delivering Christmas cards, kept getting invited in for sherry / coffee / mince pies!! :D ) and I was BOILING because I had my big coat on.

This morning's torrential hailstorm has given way to a thick blizzard just now.

we had the same, except that it wasn't quite as heavy as that. Driving rain this morning moving to snow at lunchtime, although that's stopped for now. Just waiting for the frost overnight to turn everything back into the skating rink we had last week...

Biggest snowflakes I've ever seen! They were only forecasting a bit of sleet here today, with heavy snow Saturday. My dark blue car turned white in a matter of minutes. Looks windy out there too, it's blowing horizontally past the window.

It's snowing here too. This time it's the nasty wet snowy stuff not the powdery sort of last time and it's very windy. At least it's not laying yet as the road are wet from all the rain we had over night and this morning. If it freezes tonight it'll be hell out there in the morning.

Ooh don't like the sound of that. We live on a hill which ends up on a main road. Nightmare when it's icy. We USED to be ok because the man who drove the council gritter lorry used to live opposite. Sadly, he's moved so we don't get gritted.
