o dear

obviously the vanity part was aimed at buying new bins with a special logo even though this was not essential.

Hiyah Biscuit

Our school is trying to upgrade our library with bright new furniture. Our wish list is as follows:

A giant 'storytellers' chair for indoors.
Some giant bean bags to seat several children (preferably waterproof)
Library dividers that can be used to slot in a picture as well as text
Themed rugs showing fairytales or nursery rhymes
Spectrum coloured items (to really jazz things up)
Funky library card storage boxes

We also don't order many things because the delivery charge to NI is sometimes expensive even though it's still the UK.

BTW, we haven't ordered any of these things yet because we can't find them.

You might also want to contact NI schools NOW because the main education boards here are reclaiming underspent monies from budget so schools are making sure they overspend before the end of the financial year and they need to order right now. The boards are planning to take back several million!

Thanks red fraggle

Very interesting. I am getting the office to look into Northern Ireland - as you say the freight costs can be quite high - but it we could get enough orders it might be worth looking into.

You have given me some good ideas - at the moment we only do the furniture range - in fact i could send you our how to design your library space brochure which may help you. I know when we did a library area recently we did source some large ladybird cushions so i will ask where we got them in case that helps you - will have to be next week though as i am at home recouping after an operation this week.

Regards

Paula

Don't get tables with tops that can be unscrewed to save space. Um, not sure how to explain them, but they have these big bolt like things in them and a hinge so you can unscrew the table top and then move them against the wall for extra space when needed. There is always one smart alex in the class that will undo those bolts and it's just a fantastic time to get everything picked up while he laughs his fanny off.

And no, I can't spell half the time

I was getting cross yesterday about the recycling containers provided by the council. We don't have a garage, so I have to store recycling in the kitchen and by the end of the fortnight it has taken over. * They have given a different shape and style of container for every item they collect, so they don't stack. The plastic bottle container is a string bag, which sprawls everywhere. I have tried using my own plastic boxes, but they were destroyed by the binmen throwing them around. I am currently using some canvas bags from Lakeland, but they sag all over the place.

What I need is a storage unit that keeps them all tidy and separate.

Maybe this is a gap in the market for you?

Spain has solved the problem. My daughter has 3 large plastic coated bags with handles, all the same size, that clip together with sturdy press studs. One yellow, one green and one blue. One for paper, one for plastic and one for glass. There are large bins also colour coded in neat enclosed areas, regulary dotted about. She picks the whole caboodle up in one go, sticks it in the boot of the car and drops it at the bins. She could walk but she's too lazy

Not provided free by the local council but they didn't cost her much to buy.

Edit: I just found them here. £10.99

Edit again: Found them on amazon at elitehousewares for £5.45

We bought ourselves a set of stackable recycling bins from Argos I think. They are front opening so we have them in a corner of the kitchen and put bottles, paper etc in separate bins as and when. Then the night before the stuff is collected we transfer it to the council containers which we keep outside at the back of the house. They work well for us and only take up the floor space of one container.

Gill those are the ones I have that are driving me mad. (Well slightly prettier colours)

I have the paper and card in one, which I then have to separate again because the council want paper in a plastic box and card in a different canvas bag. Tins and bottles go in one, which isn't a problem to separate as we don't use many of either and then the drawstring bag that the plastic goes in is in the third, but after one week it is full of milkbottles and other plastic and so it goes everywhere in the second week. They stood up fine at first, but now due to the amount of use they sag all over the place. I tried turning them round so they sagged against the wall and they just sagged out again. Now they have given us a thing for food waste, which I'm ignoring. I don't throw much food out and I don't want to have to keep washing out a smelly mouldy food bin, which you aren't allowed to put a liner in.

Then there are separate bags to put batteries and modern lightbulbs in. I am trying to be green, and used to recycle plastic before they brought in kerbside collections for that. i could take it to the recycling point when the bag was full, but now they do kerbside collection they have taken away the plastic bottle recycling thing from the centre of the village.

My nephew had that problem- bags and boxes for everything you could think of. He gave up -and if anyone is green then he's your man.

Leeds has a very simple method. We have black, green and brown wheelie bins. Black is general, Green is recycling (paper cans tins plastics,) and a brown bin. The brown bin is garden waste ( & composting waste).

Just they havent got it sussed yet. By the time I've put my composting in the brown bin and the recycling in the green bin then I have very little general waste. This is where they fall down. The general bin is emptied weekly, the green bin monthly and the compost bin fortnightly. I need the recycling bin emptied weekly, the general monthly and the composting fortnightly.

What actually happens is I fill up the relevant bins first and then the overflow goes in the general just to get rid of it.
