Re: I'm Busy Reading....
Is anyone else totally lost by all this? You've all started speaking what I can only presume is a sci-fi dialect I've never heard of!!!
Re: I'm Busy Reading....
And I still think you've got an extra "i" in there near the end
(An Artificer makes things like gadgets or machines. An Artificier - as I've just discovered - is the French for someone who makes fireworks.)
Mind you, you have also managed to include one of my top-ten pet hates. Rouge is red make-up (usually blusher.) The problem is that because a lot of people rely on automatic spell-checking, they tend not to realise that they have made this one, because it is also a word that will be in the dictionary. And it doesn't immediately look wrong. I really wish Wizards hadn't decided to replace the word "thief" in D&D, even though I can understand their reasoning.
edit:no, Laura, it's a fantasy dialect rather than an SF one. And, as with any dialect, you do generally have to have lived there for some years before you can understand the lingo.

Don't worry Laura. I have no idea what they're on (or on about) either. I usually prefer to speak English (or bad language).
You're only given a little spark of madness. You mustn't lose it.

Re: I'm Busy Reading....
My current borrowing from the Library is "My Gonads Roar" by Harpic Drainer (Richard Napier). The sub-title is "The wild word test of Sam Ragan - from polo dips to fleecy britches". (See if you can work out what those are anagrams of!) The title is an anagram of 'Gordon Ramsay' and it is full of anagrams of people's names. These include album titles for musicians (Arctic Monkeys - Sticky Romance), film titles for actors (Sharon Stone - Another's Son), book titles for writers (Vladimir Nabokov - Vivid Amoral Bonk) and a complete rewrite of Harry Potter (Harry Potter and the Zebras of Anion Park, anyone?) with some extra anagrams such as the names of footballers (Ashley Young - He's only a guy) and cricketers (Ian Botham - Him on a bat).
One page is a list of anagrams of Premier League football teams, managers and stadia. The team names have given me inspiration for a crashed row.

Re: I'm Busy Reading....
Following on comment I made a few days ago about author Asprin.
Tried one called E Godz first of all -- not really impressed by this one
Then tried Mith-Gotten set in a complete fantasy world - this one I enjoyed and will try more from the library (too mean to buy)

Re: I'm Busy Reading....
You ought to start at the beginning with "Another Fine Myth", because that sets up the scenario quite well. After that it hardly matters, although the characters get introduced bit by bit until the cast gets a bit too big.
(Personally, I love Myth-Conceptions the most, but almost all of them are fun.)

Re: I'm Busy Reading....
ok. I've finished reading Shirley, which I thought was ok, but not as good as charlotte Bronte's other stuff. I'm now reading The Archaeology of Britain. I was really looking forward to it, until I read the introduction, which talked about how archaeology has become more popular thanks to shows like the BBC's TimeTeam. Now I have no objections to timeteam, but its on channel 4!! If they can't get that right, what hope do they have of getting the stuff about 5000 years ago right??
Also, it keeps telling you about these amazing features of different places, and not showing pictures of them, which is very annoying!!!
Rant over.

Re: I'm Busy Reading....
I'm nearly always busy reading - if I'm not doing puzzles or on the computer.
To comment on remarks made by various people so far:
Lord of the Rings is my 'dessert island' book ever since I first read it in 1971. (I wanted to call my daughter Elinor.) Every time I read it I find something new and knowing the ending doesn't spoil it at all - I must read the Silmarillion again sometime.
As a young teenager we only had a very small local village library. I read all the Bond and Saint books long before I saw any of the films - and was so disappointed when I eventually did.
I also read most of Anya Seton
Pride and Prejudice is also a favourite - the BBCTV production of that was good, unlike the recent film.
Happy Potter books all well thumbed!
I like Stephen Donaldson although I don't often reread all the Thomas Covenant series I often go back to Mordant's Need.
Holidays are good to read long books that you may not otherwise tackle as you need to read more than a chapter a night to get into them and sitting on the beach (or indoors waiting for the rain to stop) or on planes is great for this. I read War and Peace on honeymoon!!

I have also enjoyed most of Anya Seton. Why do you think my daughter is called Katherine?

Re: I'm Busy Reading....
Great for when you're ill in bed and needing something familiar like the Georgette Heyers which I used to re-read for the same reason although I haven't gone back to them recently.

Are you enjoying the Forgotten Garden Looby? I read that a while ago and have just found The House at Riverton after a lot of searching.

Re: I'm Busy Reading....
yes, a large amount of this thread seems to have been written in a foreign language.
Re: I'm Busy Reading....
Yes I am. My sister brought them both with her on holiday for me to read but I had to leave The House at Riverton as I didn't have enough weight allowance to bring it home and I assumed I'd be able to pick it up in a charity shop somewhere. She said Forgotten Garden was better.gill216 wrote:Are you enjoying the Forgotten Garden Looby? I read that a while ago and have just found The House at Riverton after a lot of searching.
