If you were running this live I'd have found somewhere to sheath that double handed great sword by now

I'm off to the private thread to have a think... be back when I've thunk :)

id suggest posting in your own thread as "im going to......"

for instance if id decided that enough was enough

im going to get the black bag grab julian the guild wizard and place his hand over the open bag and demand he fly me down...

... and what will you be saying while you're picking the Magic Missiles out of your rear end???

That plan has more holes in it than you would have after Julian practices his "Hudson Bay" landing at the bottom of the pit ;)

true but i never said my plan was a good one just showing how to post it ;-)

both teams passed and did reasonably well
ill let them explain there method

the cutters got close to my official solution but as always with these things the swingers found a much more complex way to do it ;-)

neither team spotted the puzzle in the room ;-)..cough cough chess board cough cough
btw neither team spotted the three sectioned 20 ladders on the celing..... :-D
ill add the solution to my other thread and post the next scene

:-D and i think someone has had some ideas that might help on this one all ready ;-)

Our solution:

We threw the table over the edge into the pit to protect us from the poisoned spikes and provide a safe landing zone.
Kingsley and I got in the bag of holding. MBH tied himself and Fernando together and to the bags and the pole.
They then jumped over the edge and pushed the button on the pole. They then lowered themselves (and us) by doing double pushes on the button until 1 ft above the table, and untied themselves. Just before going through the door K and G climbed out of the bag. (I can't remember if we took the chess pieces with us)

(This is a simplified version, but that was mainly what happened)

Turn the table upside down, test how strong it is. If it seems feasible that the table will support us then by a process we've already determined (if necessary use a chess piece to test the bags) find the bag of holding. Stuff LAT into it and tie the rope to the table, attach LAT's bag and make some security loops in the rope to use as hand and footholds, and tie the other end to the rod [assuming the table is strong enough, otherwise we'll just tie more loops in the rope for footholds and hang on like grim death].
By a process we've already determined (if necessary use a chess piece to test the bags) find the bag of holding. Stuff LAT into it and attach it securely, either to the table or simply to the rope if necessary.
Fix the other end of the rope to the rod.
Set the rod over the pit and fix the position and get everyone in position on the rope/table under it. The top person (me if you like) will press the button repeatedly to lower in very short stages until the people at the bottom can step down between the spikes, clearing some of the area with the bag of devouring if feasible. The top person (me) will climb down and we'll let LAT out of the bag.
PS, no LATs were harmed in the making of this scenario. She was very good and well behaved, and did as she was told without complaining. Thank you!

:) Not bad going at all... And giraffes intuition paid off, as we saw the dropped table pass through the illusionary spikes (taking one worry off our minds).

I've been busy (and unwell) so haven't been keeping up with all this. Just took a quick look and saw a diagram which appeared to suggest that LAT had been forced into a bag and lowered somewhere, which has spikes in it :o . I have quickly looked away again because I don't want to end up being called as a witness. Hope you've recovered from your ordeal, LAT!

She was lucky, she had the bag to herself! Kingsley and I had to share. :(

Since anyone or anything in the bag is really 'elsewhere' (multiple dimension magic) then you had a far more comfortable 'ride' than the rest of us. Just Fernando's and my way of looking after the ladies :geek:

been mulling over how to adjudicate the most recent scene

the easiest way for me is to apply the d&d rules to it so im being fair well consistent
for simplicity im assuming every one has all skills a 4 ranks(the maximum a first level character can have in any skill) and and assuming your stats are all 16 (they are usually made by rolling three 6 sided dice and adding so im being generous on all fronts)
skill checks are usually made by rolling a d20 and adding your skill ranks plus a modifier based on the ability score appropriate

however its possible not to role and assume a roll of 10..if your not rushed and are just taking an average result..

which is what im going to do

which means the climb check result for your charactors is 10+4 ranks+3 ability modifier totalling 17

now the wall your intending to climb is completely flat and cant be normally climbed

the normal rolls needed to successfully climb something as examples are

0 a slope too steep to walk up or a knotted rope with a wall to brace against

5 a rope with a wall to brace against or a knotted rope or a rope affected by the rope trick spell

10 a surface with ledges to hold onto and stand on such as a very rough wall or a ships rigging

15 any surface with adequate handholds and footholds such as very rough rock or a tree or a unknotted rope or pulling
your self up just by your hands.

20 an uneven surface with some narrow handholds and footholds

25 a rough surface such as a stone wall or brickwork or a ceiling with handholds but no footholds

modifiers to the rolls needed
climbing a chimney (two walls opposite each other narrow enough for you to brace against both) adds 10 to your roll

climbing a corner (where you can brace against perpendicular walls) adds 5 to your roll

slippery surface takes 5 off your role

using pitons
one piton is needed every 3ft (minimum) and they give adequate hand holds

starting alphabetically

team Cutters
SparkOut wrote:If there's time then that seems like a good idea.

Putting it together, how about this? :

Each of us glue 100 coins together. Stack the crates by the wall. I'm assuming that from a stability point of view as well as fairness that we can certainly gain 2 feet of height that way, even if not 4.

Stick the first stack of coins at 2'6" from base height (so 4'6", or 6'6" if the mod is being generous with the height we can gain from the chests).

Stick the first candlestick at 5' from base height (so 7' or 9'). Use the coin stack as a small booster step to get up to the candlestick, and stick another coin stack 2'6" further up. Repeat sticking candlesticks and coin stacks alternately at 2'6" intervals.

That way it will be easier and safer to get from one candlestick "rung" to another on the way up, we can use the coin stacks as footholds and handholds both for stability and boost.

That would put us having the top candlestick at at least 27 feet, leaving an easy job to get over the edge of the pit and out.

I don't think the demon will be delayed by trying to pick up a solitary gold piece here or there. If we're not gone by the time he gets here, then we've failed.

id rule this similar to using pitons but since its really like a ladder braced against a wall id apply the climing a corner modifier meaning you need to achieve a 10 on the climb roll this works

an early post
MBH wrote: Giraffe is organizing the team for this scene
a little later
MBH wrote:First I'll help tip the coins out of the heavy chest into a pile for the others to work with (it looks like they've already retrieved the glue supply), then put the now lighter chests in the corner we intend to climb out of.

Going to each candle in turn, I'll lift the candle of the holder - move the candlestick out of the way - then tip a bit of wax on the floor to let me secure the candle back into place on the floor. I'll line the collection of candle sticks up at the side of the room beside the chests.

By then there should be some glued stacks of coins being stood to one side, so I'll get the 4th pot of glue and start turning the stacks into 'footholds' up the wall starting at a convenient height above the stacked boxes. (Diagram to follow)
evenly spaced candlesticks up the wall.
I should be able to get the first one in place without leaving the top of the chests.
Once I've reached the height I can comfortably position them I'll put a collection of set columns of coins inside my shirt, turn my back into the corner and start walking up the foot-rests until my shoulders are higher than the top foot-rest.

I'm holding the glue pot in one hand so then every step up I'll use the other hand to get a footrest out of my shirt, dip it in the glue, and stick it to the wall - increasing the footrests evenly up the wall.

When I run out of coin stacks, I'll need a runner to fetch and carry shirtfulls of new footrests. [Hands up anyone daft enough to have stuck his fingers together  ]

He can follow my route, walking up below me until he is able to reach up and pass me the footrests and candlesticks one-by-one.

This means that I'm first up - I'll stay to help the rest of the party. Second person up can go and check out our escape route.
Image

all together worked similarly to the others
again id call it adequate handholds as with pitons but braced in a corner so needing a role of 5...

so again id rule this works

:-D
