I'm posting on a part-time member's behalf... Little Jennie isn't well
We've seen her sleeping more and having trouble going up stairs, jumping on furniture, etc. At almost 13 years old (but very fit) we were thinking it might be mechanical - athritis in the hips, etc.
Arranged for an x-ray to have a propper look, and it was recommended that she have blood tests first to make sure the kidneys will get rid of the sedative/aneasthetic OK. Took her in yesterday morning and left her there at the vets
Got a call later saying they had results from the blood test and they aren't happy about the way her kidneys are working. Advised a 24-hour 'drip' and a retest the next day.
Since we've lost each of 4 VERY OLD cats over 4 years - each ending up with internal organ failure - my wife was in an instant mess thinking we had lost Jennie (regardless of what is discovered). So that the two didn't distress each other, I went alone to visit Jen last night and found her bright, alert, and irritated as hell about the tube strapped onto (into) her foreleg

She showed off at my arrival by eating all the food in her bowl, and I had a good 15-minute chat with her about what was going on.
Don't laugh... she understands English perfectly

She barked her head off at me as I was leaving, but she was annoyed rather than distressed.
Talked to the night nurse at 7:30 this morning and was told that Jen had been fine - sleeping, eating, doing her business. So that sounds good.
Waiting now for this lunchtime's set of tests to decide if she can come home or needs another 24 hours 'flushing' the kidneys.
I've also learned a lot more about the possibilities, and with diet change (special renal food) and possibly medication if it is required, she should still have the few years left that we hoped she had.
The house feels VERY EMPTY without her here. She's only small and weighs 3Kg but she is a massive personallity. She has had a fantastic life with lots of experiences, but we're hoping for a few more before she goes.
