Re: Illnesses and Injuries....
I'm still catching up on posts, and as I've not decided to add Bunny to the foe list this is taking much longer than expected.
Laura, I have two cures for sore throats. Ginger tea: 2 cups water, 1/2 cup honey/sugar your choice, and abut an inch of mashed ginger-just take the side of a big knife to it and push it a bit-or use a meat tenderizer. Bring it all to a boil and it is lovely.
The other one is a "Chinese Medicine" I would think you could get it in some shops there. I was able to get it in the States, and not just in China town. Loquat syrup. It comes in a red box and is a thick brown liquid. Kind of like molasses. it's called "king To Nin Jiom Pei Pa Koa" It is amazing stuff for sore throats. When I have my long days, I take a couple of spoonfuls between classes to keep going-I don't believe in lecturing with a microphone, so My big mouth does it all. This stuff can be taken straight (if you can take the taste of it) or mixed in warm water.
Have I written this before? I'm getting de ja vue.

Re: Illnesses and Injuries....
I'm posting on a part-time member's behalf... Little Jennie isn't well
We've seen her sleeping more and having trouble going up stairs, jumping on furniture, etc. At almost 13 years old (but very fit) we were thinking it might be mechanical - athritis in the hips, etc.
Arranged for an x-ray to have a propper look, and it was recommended that she have blood tests first to make sure the kidneys will get rid of the sedative/aneasthetic OK. Took her in yesterday morning and left her there at the vets
Got a call later saying they had results from the blood test and they aren't happy about the way her kidneys are working. Advised a 24-hour 'drip' and a retest the next day.
Since we've lost each of 4 VERY OLD cats over 4 years - each ending up with internal organ failure - my wife was in an instant mess thinking we had lost Jennie (regardless of what is discovered). So that the two didn't distress each other, I went alone to visit Jen last night and found her bright, alert, and irritated as hell about the tube strapped onto (into) her foreleg She showed off at my arrival by eating all the food in her bowl, and I had a good 15-minute chat with her about what was going on.
Don't laugh... she understands English perfectly She barked her head off at me as I was leaving, but she was annoyed rather than distressed.
Talked to the night nurse at 7:30 this morning and was told that Jen had been fine - sleeping, eating, doing her business. So that sounds good.
Waiting now for this lunchtime's set of tests to decide if she can come home or needs another 24 hours 'flushing' the kidneys.
I've also learned a lot more about the possibilities, and with diet change (special renal food) and possibly medication if it is required, she should still have the few years left that we hoped she had.
The house feels VERY EMPTY without her here. She's only small and weighs 3Kg but she is a massive personallity. She has had a fantastic life with lots of experiences, but we're hoping for a few more before she goes.

Hope Jennie will be OK MBH, I know what it's like when you're worrying about a family member who can't tell you how they're feeling.
Hope she'll be home and making her presence felt again soon.

Re: Illnesses and Injuries....
It's good news that Jennie is looking brighter. With small animals they go down fast but they pick up fast too. Hope she's home with you soon.
There's no point in having a last minute if you don't use it!

Re: Illnesses and Injuries....
Sorry for the last posting, but I wanted to update everyone.
After 24 hours of fluids 'flushing' her kidneys, the follow-on blood test showed vastly better numbers for the things that were sky-high.
I was able to pick her up late this afternoon, and she was bright, responsive, (and determined to lick me to death). They have advised a specific 'renal' diet product, and want to see her next week and do another blood test in a month to see if it has been a one-off incident with her kidney function or something longer-term.
On the plus side - this problem may well be the answer to what has been wrong, so she escapes sedation and x-rays. [The sedation at this time would have been a bad idea anyway]
She is currently curled up on the bean-bag sound asleep, and I'll be keeping a close eye on her in the coming days.
Thanks for all your good thoughts and wishes. Hopefully she'll be back online soon

Re: Illnesses and Injuries....
I went to see a specialist this morning about my swollen and painful right hand. I've been struggling to use it since before Christmas. He seems to think it's tenosynovitis, or inflamation of the tendon sheath. He has given it a hefty injection of cortisone, which has left it much more painful and swollen, but hopefully that is temporary.
