New year shenanigans
I'm trying to write some puzzles based round a locked room idea (just don't ask!) and would appreciate it if anyone could see if these questions are do-able or not please? These first ones are based on House of Games style "one letter changed in a well known film" type of thing. It's not been easy as I am trying to generate a clue for the next puzzle! Constructive criticism appreciated!
1935 film starring Charles Lawton and Clark Gable, about Hertfordshire council staff walking out of their jobs in protest at harsh treatment by Captain Bligh
1964 film musical in which Professor Henry Higgins attempts to turn a cockney working-class girl into a successful barber.
1975 film in which a dangerous group of killer Rabbis unleash chaos on a beach community off Long Island.
1959 religious epic film starring Charlton Heston and his mangy dog.
1946 American Christmas family drama produced by Frank Capra about an angel who enjoys receiving positive feedback on social media.
1931 Charlie Chaplin film about a tramp who enjoys ladies' hosiery.
1994 film starring Tom Hanks as a kind-hearted, slow-witted man with a hunched back.
1969 western starring William Holden and Ernest Borgnine who are outlaws with a penchant for outdoor seating.
1977 Woody Allen film about his relationship with a space hopper.
1990 Kevin Costner western in which he establishes a rapport with some really stupid people and some lupines.
1975 film starring Jack Nicholson about the day a hurricaine narrowly misses the mental assylum.
1982 Stephen Spielberg blockbuster featuring an alien telecommunications company.#
1980 film starring Robert Di Nero as a middleweight boxer who has a long gap between fights.
1977 space film starring jedi who are employed to listen out for information about developments in the galaxy.
1933 Marx Brothers film about someone who needs to drink minestrone through a straw.

Oh, and here are some connecting walls. Can you get the connections? Again, there are some pretty random things in here as parts of them are clues.

Re: New year shenanigans
...There will also be a pretzel puzzle and a lolly stick puzzle, and a bit of finding something on a map and clues all round the place. But obviously I can't really try those out on you! TIA for any feedback.

Been bored have you?
I shall have a look. Have got a few on first look. Shall I PM so as not to spoil it for others or do you want collaboration?
Also, do I assume that your friends/family won't have internet access when doing these?

Re: New year shenanigans
Well, I'm on day 9 of isolation, so you can imagine! I've also been making a mosaic teapot stand.
Thank you for taking the time to look for me.
I may allow guests to use their phones just on the film one ONLY if they get horribly stuck and can't work out the message they need for the next stage! They will have to use them for a teeny bit of research about the location on the map anyway. But other than that, they are on their own!

Re: New year shenanigans
Oh, this was another one...
The actual puzzle involves coloured squares and messages and things, but basically these are clues to chemical elements...
Associated with somewhere some Brexiteers think we have left?! (8)
Found in some cellars on Dartmoor. (5)
How odd! Drug bindi mummy! (7)
I got robbed today, so I called for one of these.(6)
It makes the white flashes in fireworks. (9)
It's because I didn't have quite enough money to buy my copy of his single,
That's Amore! (6)
My tribute is a bit mixed. (7)
Sometimes used to kill vampires. (6)
Sounds like Andy Murray could be a part of this? (10)
Superman wouldn't like it! (7)
Take a deep breath… (6)
The smell of hell. (7)
This is part of what you put on your chips. (6)
You might call a boring moron this?! (5)

Well, I can do 3 of the film ones, which is 3 more than I usually manage on film questions!

Well, that's a start! TBH I'm pretty useless at film questions too!

Hmmm
realised there is a pretty major hiccup with the connecting walls, so ignore those for now, having a rethink!

Will I have heard of all the chemical elements? I left school nearly 50 years ago!
Or can I cheat and look at a list?

Re: New year shenanigans
You can look at a periodic table (or a list!) as my guests will have a periodic table to use!
Also, here is a replacement for one of the connecting walls, hopefully this one works!
AL
ATILLA
BARRY
BRITAIN
CRAGGY
DAMIEN
DANE
DESMOND
ESCAPE
JAMES
JASON
LAPUTA
RICHARD
SCOTT
TRACY
TREASURE

Re: New year shenanigans
I think I have all the films apart from the Woody Allen one. (I have a very unconvincing, tenuous guess.) A couple (Chaplin, the 1969 Western) I looked up filmographies and worked out. Mostly I have actually heard of the relevant film (though not seen) so at least it was possible to work out. It was surprisingly tricky for some, even with just one letter change!
Re: New year shenanigans
Shame about the connecting wall list being in alphabetical order.
Re: New year shenanigans
For the elements, is there a possible confusion between vampires and werewolves?

Re: New year shenanigans
As LAT also stumbled on the Woody Allen one I think I will rewrite that. It was supposed to give you ANNIE BALL (was Annie Hall).SparkOut wrote: ↑Sun Nov 21, 2021 10:56 amI think I have all the films apart from the Woody Allen one. Re: New year shenanigans
Ah, you could be right - it's garlic for vampires, isn't it? OK thank you, I will change that!

Re: New year shenanigans
That WAS my tenuous guess for the Woody Allen film, but I was unconvinced.
Re: New year shenanigans
And my understanding of vampire lore is that they are repulsed by garlic, but not harmed or otherwise affected. A stake through the heart will effectively "kill" one, but only for as long as the stake remains in place. To dispose of a vampire permanently, after staking, it must be decapitated and the mouth of the severed head stuffed with holy wafer.
There are other (sometimes conflicting) accounts of the effect of daylight/sunlight and the harm/permanence of its effect, ranging from turning it to dust forever, to pain and being forced to flee to its own coffin.
