Well known phrases and sayings
Re: Well known phrases and sayings
Somewhere in America, where they speak a version of English but with some odd pronunciation, there is a Lever that is the Master Control for the Internet and TV, the Polarity of the Earth's Magnetic Field, the Big Plug in the Drain at the Bottom of the Ocean, the Path of the Orbit of the Planets and the lock on the Safe containing Colonel Sanders' Secret Recipe for KFC and the Formula for Coca Cola.
Needless to say, any change in the state of this Lever would result in Cataclysmic Disasters and the only time it should ever be considered would be to avoid Total Planetary Destruction.
The Lever is set in a Clearing in a Forest, surrounded by Distant Mountains and Quite Inaccessible but still requires a Dedicated Guard.
Nate is the Chief Ranger who Patrols the Forest Clearing and scans the Skies Above to ensure there is no danger to the Lever of being Pulled by Accident or Malicious Manipulation. He is assisted by a Number of Apprentices who ensure there is a Constant Guard. At Guard Changeover Time there is a Small Ceremony (well they don't have Buckingham Palace over there) and he will say "I'm Nate, and I have Kept All Well with the Lever" and the Apprentice will reply with his name and "I will Keep All Well with the Lever".
For many years this has been going on and Nate and his Apprentices have successfully guarded the Lever from Occasional Threats such as Stupid Kids, Falling Trees, Flash Floods and even Terrorist Attack, but every Guard Changeover he has always been able to confirm "I'm Nate, and I have Kept All Well with the Lever".
One morning in the hour Just Before Dawn an Unusual Event occurred and a Meteor Burst set the Deep Blue Sky ablaze with Blinding Lights from the trails of Scorching Space Rocks breaking up, over the Forest Clearing. Seeing these Meteor Trails mostly burning out or Meteorite Paths headed away from the Forest Clearing he repeated to himself "I'm Nate, and I will Keep All Well with the Lever" and turned to approach the Lever for Added Security.
Moments later, a Large Chunk of Astral Debris broke away from the Disintegrating Meteor and was clearly on a Collision Course for the Lever. With the Speed of Approach of the Hurtling Space Chunk there was barely time even to exhale another "I'm Nate, and I will Keep All Well with the Lever" as he Selflessly Leapt into the Trajectory of the Flaming Meteorite and it was Deflected by Millimetres to land Safely Beyond the Lever, although making a Large Crater.
Nate's Apprentices rushed to the scene and found his Mangled and Crushed Body wrapped round the Blasted Rock as dirt, dust and leaves fell around.
They removed their hats and Honoured the Bravery of the Chief Ranger who protected the world from Untold Disaster by Protecting the Lever. "He made the Ultimate Sacrifice" they intoned, "but in the end, Better Nate than Lever".
Needless to say, any change in the state of this Lever would result in Cataclysmic Disasters and the only time it should ever be considered would be to avoid Total Planetary Destruction.

You're only given a little spark of madness. You mustn't lose it.

Since this seems to be the new default, but I'm not nearly as good:
It was surprisingly noisy in the Church that evening, but not due to the bells. The campanology group had gathered, and were in the middle of an argument - the Rime Boys were all wanting to join and their parents were trying to advocate for them but the other bell-ringers were uncertain.
"Albert, Brian and Colin have been looking forward to this for years," said their father. "Even Daniel wants a go now."
"But Albert and Colin have no sense of timing!" protested the Canon. "If we let them in, it will all go wrong and everyone will notice."
"Well," said the Vicar. "Maybe there's a way around this. If we put up some extra ropes, but don't attach them to bells, then Albert and Colin can join in without causing problems."
And that turned out to be the solution.
"The not-so-good Rime Boys can imagine they are ringing the bells, but we can at least Let The Good Rimes Toll."

Oh fun! Well done!
I think the game is enhanced by little efforts such as this, but I don't think it's a requisite to continue.

What is a requisite to continue, however, is an answer to furnish.

Nearest I can think of is

Seems a trifle cynical though!

Re: Well known phrases and sayings
I keep failing to get anything whatever I try, but often keep coming back to "and a D..." at the end, and "and a day" is a frequent thought.
Even when that isn't a thought, I am not getting close to thinking anything plausible.

Re: Well known phrases and sayings
I've never seen the point about that phrase. But then, I'm not shy about telling people if I need a wee!
And sorry, but don't have a joke about that.
So here is another dog related one. What do you call a dog with no ears?
Anything you like, he can't hear you.

OK, now I have an insight, thanks to a giant purple rabbit with a lumpy bum and a bladder problem. But she is gorgeous and loveable, and loved a lot.
