Well I have since realised that I did post a spoilered answer (k) but I still can't work out how I got it!

If anyone can help I would be very pleased.

Aaaaahhh, got it.
If you change the letters into numbers, they are
5 15 20 8 12
7 19 26 10 15
2 21 23 6 17
24 1 25 14 ?

So you are adding up from either side in each row to make them total the central row. So bottom row is 24+1 = 25 / 25= 14+ ?

Well, I know this isn't really relevant to "passing the time" apart from the fact that I've been spending time doing Guardian cryptic crosswords (which, as Scurra helpfully pointed out to me some time ago, you can do for free here https://www.theguardian.com/crosswords/cryptic/28624 ) But I must say that I thought that both the clue and the answer for 23 down were pretty topical at the moment! (Sorry, bit politically biased! )

Wow - you always used to reckon you were rubbish at cryptics (which I always doubted....) - and here you are going for the Guardian
I have been an addict for more years than I care to count - and we do it every evening after dinner. 'Paul' is by far the wittiest setter and that particular clue will have appealed especially to Guardian readers

Yes, we do them most evenings now. I'm also getting into (very cautiously and with varying success) the Azed. Now that is a WHOLE different ball game! The combination of cryptic clues and words you would hardly believe existed - usually resulting in trawling through the trusty Chambers! Although we are at the level of sometimes being able to complete a standard one (in about 4 hours! ) but next week's prize Christmas one may be a complete non-starter!
