Question for clever people who know stuff about computers

#1 Post by Bunnylump » Sun Apr 19, 2009 11:51 pm

Someone has kindly sent me a certain well known celebrity chef's new recipe book by e mail. Apparently an employee of the publisher's sent a word version of said book to a friend by e mail and it's going round the internet. Clearly said celebrity must be very peed off about this, and I believe the employee has since been sacked.

The only thing is, not that I'm paranoid, you understand, but is there any way they can trace who's had copies of the e mail? I don't want to get prosecuted!! :?

lets have a quick look here......
...
...

.... There's you...... the person 2 doors down...... the lady with the green door...

OK - you wanted me to be serious?? The only way I think they could do it is by following the chain. Find someone who sent it - track down who they sent it to - got to their computer and check if they sent it on.....

So unless it's got "Home Office" and "Double-Oh Clearance Only" I think you're pretty safe. :)

Now - in Tom Clancy's "Net Force" books they can do loads of things in the 'near future' - who knows how far along they are

Yes, it's perfectly easy to do that, if rather tedious. And I would guess that in this instance very few of the people who have forwarded it have taken any of the elementary precautions that would make it a tiny bit harder to trace.
But I also suspect that the sheer volume of circulation in this case may make it impossible to deal with.

(I also suspect that you are probably already guilty of handling stolen property, even if you haven't opened the attachment! I'm not sure that there has been a court case to establish this yet though - and this would probably be a very bad choice of case to pursue.)
Never put off till tomorrow what you can do the day after tomorrow.
All of my puzzles are simple and obvious. For certain values of "simple" and "obvious".

Oh right. Thanks. I won't panic then.

Someone else (who I shan't incriminate just in case) said they were sent a similar thing a while back, which appeared to be incomplete (as far as I can see this is 122 pages of recipes which are all there). I bet he (the chef) is hopping mad!

I'd like to add that I am not in the habit of receiving stolen goods. In fact, I am so painfully honest most people think I am mental. (E.g. I don't copy CDs or DVDs or sheet music, I've even been known to return to a shop when I realised I'd been paid coppers too much change).

I'll have a look and see if I've still got it in my inbox at work. I may have deleted it by now! ;)
