Re: The whinge thread
So much to think of when naming, like strange initials, that have a meaning.

Re: The whinge thread
We didn't give either of our children second names as I just couldn't see the point! Besides, as a child I was embarassed by mine which seemed horribly old-fashioned - although I have since grown to like it rather a lot (Constance).
After all, if it is given to you at birth, you are rather stuck with it, whereas if you don't have one imposed on you, then you can always invent one for yourself later on

Re: The whinge thread
well, we're having enough difficulty coming up with one name for ours! (well, we're ok for a boy (we think), but a girl? and, no, Katherine isn't an option!)
Re: The whinge thread
Three weeks before I had Fernando I was told I was expecting a boy, and I was so upset as we only had girl's names sorted out. A good job I had three weeks to get used to the idea.
I ended up offending my cousin by using the name she had just chosen for her son, but then we never see them, so it doesn't matter. Poor lad is stuck with a very unusual middle name as he has a name that has been passed down the generations in my family, I think he will grow to like it eventually, but at the moment he finds it annoying.
Re: The whinge thread
You and I share something in common - although your first name is the beginning of my surname - so understand completely about comments on nutsBunnylump wrote:

Stupid thing is the number of times people have mixed up my first name and start of surname - I have been called using your first name, and then using my first name at the beginning of my surname - which makes for an interesting surname!
Re: The whinge thread
Having no middle name can be a blessing sometimes. You could be like my eldest brother (middle name Redvers) or my other older brother (middle name Quentin). Luckily my parents had come to their senses by the time I was given the middle name John.

But now you all know much more about me than I've let on to almost anyone on "the internet".

Re: The whinge thread
Hmmm. Let me see. We know you are a daddy, have a wife, you know lots of stuff about computers and your middle name is John.
I have clearly identified you and am now going to start stalking you, and siphoning off all your money and putting it into my Swiss bank account. Just you wait.

Yes, and the children are called Monkey and Pumpkin. That ought to narrow it down considerably.
Re: The whinge thread
Well Lally is Lally Pumpkin when we are being formal!
(I think midwives are trained to call all babies pumpkin so they don't have to remember the names and in these PC days calling them something more affectionate is probably frowned upon.)

How about Helen? Or maybe Beverley? (I don't recommend Fortuna, though!)eirian wrote:well, we're having enough difficulty coming up with one name for ours! (well, we're ok for a boy (we think), but a girl? and, no, Katherine isn't an option!)
Whatever you choose, make sure it doesn't clash with your surname. There was a little girl called Courtney in the Tamworth Herald 'Child of the Year' once, but her parents clearly hadn't thought about how it went with their surname.
She was Courtney Codd. (Caught any cod?)

Kingsley said she thinks it's quite nice and better than her boring, slightly old fashioned one! And if you ever get fed up with the comic surname you could swap them over!!!
