I feel the same. I took my son to vote for the first time yesterday and he was given the form which was about 2 foot long and asked if it's like that all the time. I think he just closed his eyes and put the pencil down. Thank goodness we only had the European elections and not local as well because he would have been really confused.giraffe wrote:I agree. Today I've mostly bin....
seeing my baby cousins!!! They're visiting from abroad for the week because it's my grandparents' 60th wedding anniversary. I only see them for one week each year. Last year the youngest was only 5 weeks old, and he's nearly walking now. The older one is two and chattering away, so they've changed quite a lot since the last time I saw them.
And I didn't vote yesterday, mostly because I set off to work at 6.30 am and didn't get home until after 9.30pm. Made it slightly impossible!

Aw, that's nice for you Laura. They are still so sweet when they are that age. (Well, unless they are getting into bed with you at 3am and saying "I feel sick Mummy" that is...)

Yes, I can pass them back whenever they cry. I would like to see a bit more of them though. Bed at three in the morning is too much, but one week a year is definitely not enough!

Getting ready for the 'Moderator Free Weekend' - although I notice that 1 is still hanging around at the moment
The Evil Jester has been giving me nightmares for some time now - and not because of the puzzles - That Avatar is EVIL
Bunny has now destroyed the image - by making comments about diamond tiaras and shoes
(See comments on Vauxhall.....) (Think I'm missing something here!)
So an image of an evil jester in tiara and spangly shoes would be great - any takers?

Yes, I've been worrying about the meaning of that, but I'm not sure I really want to know.
Oh, and sorry about that avatar. It seemed so appropriate when I found it.

It was so much easier on DVP - I could safely tell everyone about Scurra's penchant for sheep without him being able to delete my comments!!

Re: Today I've mostly bin...
This is how I interpreted it, using the info from The Times.giraffe wrote:I made the mistake of asking the bloke behind the counter to explain how the proportional representation worked, and he had to get a booklet out, then made a complete pigs ear of trying to interpret the diagram in there.
The votes for the parties are totalled in the region.
Totals are divided by (Seats won)+1.
Everyone starts with 0 seats, so everyone has their totals divided by 1, so they are unchanged.
The first seat is allocated to the party with the most votes. This party now has 1 seat, so the total is divided by 2 (1+1). This party's total vote is now halved.
The second seat is allocated to the party which now has the most votes.
Repeat the process until all the seats have been allocated.
If a party winds a second seat, its total vote is divided by 3; if it wins a third the total vote is divided by 4, etc.
Complicated, isn't it?
On casting my vote, I had two sheets - a small green one for Council election and a big yellow one for European election. And this was folded by the people at the polling station - first longways and then twice across.
Apparently UKIP people have complained that some of the ballots were folded wrongly, so their party was hidden from view, and hence several hundred people were unable to find them. They will be contesting the outcome, but surely they will only be successful if they can prove these people were going to vote for UKIP in the first place.

Re: Today I've mostly bin...
Well, the proportional representation thing is surely the fair way to do it, even if it is complicated?
I had a real problem fitting my enormous yellow form into the teeny little hole, as did others.
So no gossip then, Cenwulf?

Re: Today I've mostly bin...
The chap at my polling station had a stick to ram the yellow form into the hole. It started to rip as he pushed it in so I hope it remained in one piece.
Interesting to know how it works though.

... tramping around a graveyard with dictaphone and camera. I've been asked to help index the memorials in the main graveyard (100's of them). When I said yes it was a lovely sunny day and I thought yes great, now puzzle brains is over for a while and the weather is good I can help. I'm now soaked to the skins and have only do 15 graves

Oh and Strep, I'm glad it's not just me who ends up tramping around graveyards with a camera. I was on a mission with my son to photograph lichens on gravestones. We did get some strange looks. Fortunately it was sunny when we did it!!

Having a really poo assessment. (This should probably be on the whinge thread).
