I'm so excited!

#1 Post by katsmom » Mon Jun 15, 2009 2:13 pm

No, It's not what you think, get your minds out of the gutter

Some of you might know that I collect Rubik's cube type puzzles. Well, I have thousands of them. (A very sick disease if you ask me-and yes, I've talked to a "Professional" about this) Well, from the 4th of July through the 15th of August I'm having an exhibit of some of my puzzles in the exhibition center in Macau!

If you want to see where I've been for the past month (and why I haven't solved this issue of puzzle brains) click here for the puzzles that will be on display, and here for a little history of my obsession and a shameless little bit of promoting for puzzlebrains!

Sadly, I probably won't be back until my treasures are safely back home again. No, I have to go give a few speeches and do some press stuff, but I get a few weeks worth of nights in some nice hotels for free! I may even go into one of those casino places.

That sounds wonderful, Katsmom. I hope it all goes smoothly and you have a great time!!

(Sadly my computer at work is nearly as carp as the one at home, so I couldn't look at your links, but it sounds fab!!)

 my motherboard on my computer at work died today. It will take them 2 weeks to get me a new one so I was given permission to "work from home"  (as if!)

well done. Hope it all goes well. I will try that excuse with my work about the motherboard, but will be told just get out a pen and some paper.

I might try telling mine that I'm having trouble with the mothership instead. They'd be more inclined to believe that!!

Katsmom - don't forget to take some piccies so we can see what you've been up to! :D

I've had a look and they look great, I particularly like the rubiks cube with giraffes on it!

I recognise quite a few that we have here. :D

Yes, I thought that had happened with mine as well - but it was just taking an age to download and needed lots of patience! So do try again - you might get the pictures eventually. The second link gives the best detail - some really interesting stuff there! Good luck with the exhibition, Katsmom.

Interesting stuff.

I've got a Rubik's Cube Calendar.
All the stickers are white, but some are blank and others bear characters. The center squares of each face feature letters, and edge pieces have more letters so that the months from JAN to DEC can be spelt out across the centre of a face. Two edge pieces and four corner pieces have numbers so that dates from 1 to 31 can be displayed at the bottom of the face. The other four corners bear the start of the days, and an edge has 'DAY' on it to complete them. There are sufficient corners with blank stickers to allow for the top right and bottom left being blank.

Have you got the Darth Maul from Star Wars Episode 1? It's a 2x2x2 similar to Homer and Bart. I don't see it in the pictures? If you want it it's yours matey. Just PM me your address and I'll send it out to you.

Wow!! The 5 cube fills me with total fear. I had a 4 cube once when I was younger. Never managed to do it. How is 5 possible?

Cheers. BB.

Thanks for the offer Bassbloke. I do have it. I just don't have enough room at the exhibit to show all of them. (around 2500 are staying at home this time) But I'll put out a semi-desperate plea for a walker's crisps cube

You should try the 6x6x6 or 7x7x7. Talk about some beasts! Next week I go pick up the newly copied 9x9x9  I didn't see that one coming, but I got an email from the manufacturer in China, so Like Yogi Berra, I "Gotta have it!"

Cenwolf, I finally got a calendar from 1981 around 6 months ago. Brand new in the packaging. It was hard going to open it up, but now it has a place of honor on my desk. it tickles me when people try to "solve" it. I love your description. That is so well written anyone can understand it. Can I use that?

Hi katsmom - you have got an incredible collection there - a tribute to you're lifetime (so far) of puzzle solving :)

Hope everything goes well for you, and thanks (via the pdf files) for a sneaky peek into your treasures...

I've been blessed after moving to Hong Kong. Our room mate from Uni's dad had a toy factory here in the 1980's. He gave me free run of the warehouse one day! Lots of old mom and pop shops in out of the way neighbourhoods are great, and I've become friends with many of the manufacturers and designers around the world so I get samples, (and pay some pretty good prices too).

I got bored one day, and on an offhand comment made by another forum member (twistypuzzles that is) made a set of Top Trumps cards. For any of you into geeky (or is that nerdy) hobbies like mine you can get them here

And for those teachers out there, delete the words and pictures and you can have your kiddos make their own decks! This has kept Katherine entertained for over a week now. (She's off school because of closures due to H1N1 infections here). I had to find something to keep her entertained! She's taken pictures of her toys and put them into the boxes and made up her own atributes and numbers---but I'm sure you all have thought of that before. Being from the other side of the pond, these were a foreign concept to me

Feel free to do so.
I bought mine from a charity shop in January 2001. Here's a photo of it I took the other day.

Yep that's the same one I have. I just wish we had charity shops around here! I'm sure you paid a lot less for yours than I did for mine. I spend ages trolling through ebay and auction sites from Japan, Taiwan, and China. Most of the time the shipping is more than the puzzle was.

Thank you for your permission to use the description. I have snagged it for future use!

Smaz, Luckystar917 (friends from another forum) and I all went to Macau yesterday to set up for the exhibition that will open this Saturday. We left Hong Kong at 10 am to make sure we were there on time to begin. Well, at 11 there was a car waiting for us at the pier and we were off. Sadly, the venue wouldn’t be ready until 2:30 so we headed off to a nice little dim sum restaurant for the first ever Macau puzzle meet up. it was just us three in a private room playing with my toys.

Someone finally came back to pick us up at 3:30 and by 4 we were at the venue ready to set up. As we entered the room I kind of felt like Old Mother Hubbard. Nothing was ready and they were still bringing up the display cases. When all were up there, we finally were able to start setting up the puzzles. After a bit of discussion about insurance and security, the exhibition lost out on some of the older more expensive puzzles. I just didn’t feel that it was safe enough to leave them there. Somewhere along the way the messages got crossed.

Once all the puzzles were set up, we were told for the third time that the cards with the names of the puzzles on them had not been printed yet. (Hmm, wonder why, they only had them for at least a month!) No problem, Luckystar917 studied design, and I brought all the information with me so we just cut up my bits of paper, glued them to some black card and were on our way!

Once the cards were placed by the right puzzles (there was a bit of a laughable moment for me when neither of my partners could work out what a Whip-It was-a very common puzzle made in Hong Kong) we were ready to put the glass cases on top. We were told the workmen left at 8 pm for the day, and since it was only just after 7 we had plenty of time….apparently they tell time differently in Macau. Every one of them had buggered off home. After listening to a bit of one-sided yelling in Cantonese over the phone Luckstar917 got it in her head that we could do this ourselves, and we did!
By this time it was very dark, and did I mention there were no lights on in the venue? One lady had a mini-flashlight, and another was using the glow from her phone to help guide us carrying these 100 pound half inch thick glass cases around. All the while we were doing this a group of men I knick-named the Monkeys were bringing in rather large, wooden display boards. We finished putting up all the glass, and problem solved right! Wrong! There were 14 display cases and only 13 glass covers. I guess they count differently in Macau as well! Luckily that was for a couple of wooden puzzles I picked up here rather cheaply, a Meji candy tube that is easily replaced and a packing pineapple puzzle that I have a duplicate of…the woman in charge promised they would put the case on first thing in the morning. Fingers Crossed!

We double checked the locks on the upstairs doors (I broke the handle off one so I know that door won’t be opened anytime soon) and then headed downstairs to wait for security to lock the last door.

I took a few last photos and we headed for the ferry home. I know Smaz wanted to eat dinner in Macau, but after the ride over in the morning, there was no way I could do it. This was part of the fun. Jetfoils are supposed to glide over the water, I am sure ours bounced all the way there. Yes, for those of you that want to know, I did get sea sick. And I prayed all the way there that we would make it alive. Going home was smooth sailing for the first part of the ride, but they did make an announcement saying the trip would take a bit longer because of stormy seas. That was an understatement. Half an hour into the trip I was back praying to the porcelain gods one more time. I was so happy to finally make it back to Hong Kong I wanted to cheer! I won’t be there this Saturday for the opening, I just can’t stomach (get the pun) the thought of going over there again so soon. It’s now 7pm here, and I’m finally able to sit up without being sick.

What a wonderful day it all turned out to be!
Pictures of the display can be seen here
