Yeah, but apparently that thread has turned into another "beat up Scurra" thread, so I hid out in here. Obviously a mistake.

A friend recomended "Cathy's Book" mystery cum love story with a bit of vampirism? in it. Might be a great one for Kingsley. More of a teen girls book than anything, a nice trilogy with lots of nifty 'evidence' to sort through.

Kingsley has just re-read almost the entire contents of her bookshelf and has started on Lally's. I personally think she's a bit old for the Famous Five! (Bit of light relief, or revisiting childhood?)

LOL - I could well say the same. But I tend to read the new kids books. Somehow the Secret Seven and the Three Investigors (OK - and Nancy Drew) don't directly correspond to Artimis Fowl and Skulduggery Pleasant.

Then throw in some CSI novels, Mark Billingham crime stories, and Dr Who / Torchwood books along with the various Fantasy series I'm following, and I have an 'interesting mix'.

I've bought a new book for Kingsley, but she's saving it for our holiday, so she is revisiting her childhood.

I've moved on to then next Mark Billingham novel called 'Buried' - a kidnap, multiple murders, and twists in the tale all the way.

And and Dr Who novel called The Eyeless : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Eyeless
Interesting in the fact he has no companion...

These books still give me sneaky little laughs. I'd love to know how many I MISS. I mentioned the 'Still play a good Hamlet' line when I saw it - in this one we have him explaining the lengths you would have to go to in order to wipe out an enemey village:

So you would have to kill everyone. Every man, woman, and child. If even one child is missed then in future years he'll come back as Conan the Barbarian. It's like a rule. He'll be back.

I've got a good idea who will get it, but feel free to throw me a smile or a frown on why that is funny.

Well I quite liked it (but you probably guessed that!)
My favourite Doctor Who gag comes from one of the New Adventures range of novels*. Set-up: big charity concert - think LiveAid - being held in the 1970s is being used as a cover for alien invasion. UNIT turn up, and the Brigadier utters the immortal words: "Chap with Wings, five rounds rapid". (I would expect even fewer people to get this one :))

*20 years ago, when it looked as though the show was gone forever, it was the New Adventures range of novels and the Big Finish audio plays that kept the flame of Doctor Who burning until the time was right - Russell T Davies, who effectively brought the show back, wrote a book in the range, as did many of the people who were recruited to write for the new series, which is one reason why it is so good!

I'm thinking old fashioned Defence Against the Dark Arts initially. :?:

Yes, I think that's what MBH was referring to as well.

... so, who was he talking about this time? :)

...Errrr .... No! (Since I don't know what clvrlad is talking about).

What I said could be read as a cryptic clue. ;) There are so many 'catch phrases' I was tempted to put on the end of it

I'm also reading Seventy-Eight Degrees of Wisdom. It's all about the symbolism of the Tarot.
The first part is about the Major Arcana. The Fool is a 'wild' card and hence is outside the Majors, which form three series of seven cards. The first (Magician to Chariot) represents development of the personality; the second (Strength to Temperance) represents an inner development to transcend personality; the third (Devil to World) is the final development to oneness with the universe.
The second part is a look at the Minor Arcana in detail (as opposed to the brief treatment other Tarot books give).
Unfortunately, the number of ways of doing something wrong far exceed the number of ways of doing it right. G. Kasparov

Eirian - absolutely. It was a direct quote from The Daemons but this time used to refer to Paul McCartney. I thought that was really clever in the context.

Oh well - I got it wrong again. "Don't Panic Captain Manwairing"... "Stupid Boy!".

Jones' butcher's van kitted out with portholes in the sides and roof:

"Enemy aircraft overhead - five rounds rapid"

"Up-2-3, Aim-2-3, Bang-2-3, Bang-2-3, Bang-2-3, Bang-2-3, Bang-2-3"

(My 'clue' should be more understandable now!)
