Wildlife

#1 Post by Looby » Tue Apr 28, 2009 2:43 pm

By any remote chance did anyone save the information of the garden wildlife thread from the other site.
My morehen babies have hatched and I think they are earlier this year then previously. I know I posted when they hatched last year and the year before, but I didn't save it.

How can I be angry with the badgers for digging holes in my lawn when I've just had the privilege of sitting outside with the mother and two youngsters getting on with their life as if I wasn't there and they're only 10 feet away from me!

  I loved that one. Excellent. I've sent it to another girl friend (who happens to be 6 foot 2 - makes me look like a squirt*) who loves all things giraffe. I just know she'll love it too.

*Of my closest friends (the 5 of us who go away for girly weekends), the shortest is 5'8". We must look quite scary, bit like a herd of giraffes.

I was so tempted to put this in the "Night Sky" thread, but I knew this thread was here somewhere.

I've just spent a very pleasant half-hour standing in the back garden watching a wonderful flying display by our local bat-tallion of Bats. Slow fluttering fly-pasts, exciting aerobatic manouvering, and low-level swooping.

In their review of the coming human show in Sunderland the bat spokesman classified humans as "Improving!"

Oh how brilliant! MBH, you live by a field AND you have bats?

We do have swifts who nest in a hole in next door's fascia board. I love to watch them swooping and screaming at dusk. They wait right until the last minute to fold their wings in when they hurtle at full speed towards the ridiculously small hole (where an overflow pipe was taken out). Lovely. But I am jealous of your bats, MBH.

That reminds me - Eirian and Sigur Ros: how are you getting on with your bats in the roof?

well, I had to go up into the roof to put yet more stuff up there and could see no sign of them, so I've no idea where they are! At least the neighbours who spotted them are usually pretty reliable so they must be there, and I could see the hole they use from the inside.

I could spend hours watching swifts diving and swooping, they aren't called swifts for nothing! Sigur often has to take evading action in the evenings as I think the birds/bats aim to fly at the height that would clear most heads, but don't quite manage his (at 6'8").

Well, we have had some footprints in the snow on the lawn, and a hold dug down into the soil near the fence, but not actually deep enough to get through, but have no idea what created them. The snow's melting now though, so its very difficult to guess.

I was sitting in my dining room the other day and suddenly something hit the patio doors next to me. It was a squirrel, which quite literally, looked like a cartoon - it had hit the window, and with a startled look on its face, slid, squeaking, claws out, down the window, spreadeagled!! I suspect it had probably encountered one of the many foxes.

Oh, and we had a whole bush full of coal tits (MBH, behave) out there in the summer. They're not supposed to be in this area at all, but it was definitely them!!

And we get coal tits in our garden too.

On Christmas Day, I went for a walk after watching HM; part of my route took me along the shoreline, where I saw turnstones - doing the appropriate, naturally. Then on the way back, I was walking along the side of the harbour, and saw a kingfisher. It was obvious what it was due to the brilliant blue colour.

And I also took a picture that day - a bush in my back garden has flowered:
