New Words

#1 Post by Cenwulf » Tue Mar 03, 2009 10:40 pm

This is something which I started Over There - a place for all the words which haven't appeared in dictionaries yet, or local terms for anything. I'll start off with a few puzzle-related ones:

InSiCoQua (abbr.) Something you will only find if you realise what you are supposed to be looking for. (Latin, Invenio si cogno quaererum)

Scurralous (adj.) of a puzzle, difficult to solve unless you can work out the hidden logic, which is usually InSiCoQua and only understandable after you have been given a) a hint or b) the answer.

3am moment - when you wake up in the middle of the night and suddenly realise the answer to something which had been bothering you for a long time.

aha moment - the moment at which you realise the InSiCoQua of a puzzle, especially as a 3am moment.

bemasement - a state combining amazement and bemusement, whch may be caused by looking at the latest issue of Puzzlebrains.
Unfortunately, the number of ways of doing something wrong far exceed the number of ways of doing it right. G. Kasparov

What's wrong with saying 'copied'? :?

...but it does make a good new word!

I think MBH is mixing up the 'New Words' thread with the 'New Meanings for Old Words' thread.
I'll have to start one of them as well.

The Washington Post asked readers to take any word from the dictionary, alter it slightly and supply a new definition. Here are this year's winners:

Bozone - the substance surrounding stupid people that stops bright ideas from penetrating. The "bozone layer", unfortunately, shows little sign of breaking down in the near future.

Foreploy - Any misrepresentation about yourself for the purpose of getting someone to have sex with you.

Cashtration - the act of buying a house, which renders the subject financially impotent for an indefinite period.

Sarchasm - the gulf between the author of sarcastic wit and the person who doesen't get it

Hipatitis - terminal coolness.

Osteopornosis - a degenerate disease

Glibido - all talk and no action

Arachnoleptic fit - the frantic dance performed just after you've accidentally walked through a spider's web

Catterpallor - the colour you turn after finding half a grub in the fruit you're eating

Giraffiti - Vandalism spray-painted very, very high

Love the last one - that'll have Scurra checking the walls of his nice new forum for spray-painted clues or pointers

My favourite is Bozone. That's what I have at present.

I keep telling you, Bunny - you've got the opposite problem. You're the smart one but for some reason you seem to be a magnet for the really stupid ideas :D

Oh yes, I'm skilled at coming up with stupid answers. I take great pride in that. I like to make things as complicated as possible for myself. Trouble is I'm not "simple or obvious". (Just waiting for you all to disagree with that last statement...)

Please? :?

Oh I could definitely confuse your average psychoanalyst, I reckon. I could probably make one have a nervous breakdown if I tried hard enough.

vauxhall (noun): an answer to a Puzzlebrains puzzle which has been achieved by an educated guess rather than actually working out the puzzle. (Referring to the 'Vauxhall' puzzle in Down The Tube.)

A few of my answers in Playing The Fool have been vauxhalls...

I have a feeling that we had already coined a word for that syndrome..... it's known as a 'Pisces'   .
However 'Vauxhall' lends itself beautifully to being a verb: "I vauxhalled that one" - nice thought!

No, no ; the definition of a Pisces should be 'can only be worked out if you actually understand how Scurra's mind works.'

Yes a Pisces is " a puzzle that can only be solved if you take you brain out, turn it inside out and put it back upside down"
