Re: Today I've mostly bin...
Oh I shouldn't diss the mad drunk dwarf. To be fair he wasn't actually chatting me up, just trying hard to engage Gill and I in some kind of nonsensical conversation. It's just that's NORMALLY the kind of bloke who thinks he's in with a chance with me!!
Laura, that sounds grim, hope you don't suffer for too long!!
Today I've been PLAYING. We were trying(unsuccessfully) to teach some particularly thick* year 9 bottom set science pupils about forces, friction, air resistance, resultant direction depending on force etc. They were just NOT getting it. So...
I dragged them into the science corridor, got the teacher on his wheeled typing chair, and invited them to give him a really big shove down the corridor. We then thought about the way the force had been applied, and at which points he was accellerating and slowing and stopping and why. Then we got them to make parachutes out of cotton, plastic bags and little men made out of plasticene in various shapes, and invited them to have a competition as to which one took the longest to reach the ground outside the window (down 2 storeys). By the end of the "lesson" they ALL understood basics of forces, direction, air resistance, friction, accelleration and streamlining. RESULT.
I love my job. (Most of the time).

If the core setters along with "Hints" can come to agreement in this setting, then there is positive hope for the future of Puzzlebrains..... More strength to their elbow
Re: Today I've mostly bin...
Lally did wind resistance at school a couple of weeks ago. They spent an afternoon rushing up and down the school garden holding big pieces of cardboard and making parachutes (and cutting holes in them).
Sounds like great minds think alike. I'm glad they didn't use the teacher on the typing chair method as the corridor outside their classroom had a staircase down at each end!

Re: Today I've mostly bin...
I have never done wind resistance.
(But I know that if I ever go skydiving that it might be best to pick a parachute that doesn't have any holes in it.
Re: Today I've mostly bin...
Isnt that all you need to know

Re: Today I've mostly bin...
You could even get by by just not jumping out of an aeroplane in the first place.
Re: Today I've mostly bin...
As someone that can't even face getting onto the London Eye - although made it once to the ticket queue before backing out ...... I completely agree!!!
Re: Today I've mostly bin...
So where is this place? Really good to hear the puzzle setters and Hints have had a good get together today - looking forward to seeing what you have in store for us in the futureWulfruna wrote:MBH wrote:You went to WHAT SORT of restaurant ????If it's the one that Scurra's family prefers to freqent from time to time when we get down to London, then it is definitely worth recommending

Oh, I'm with you there, Chazzie. I MADE myself get on it, but I have to say I was in a complete state of panic for the entire time. I so wish I wasn't so useless...
Oh and it was ummm somewhere near Euston. Sorry, didn't pay any attention, to busy gassing!!

Your answer should have been, "Yes - but not with you."Bunnylump wrote: My greatest example of this was a 79 year old who was about 5 feet 2, bottle end glasses and huge droplets of snot hanging from his nose, who seriously asked me if I'd fancy "a nice fish and chip supper and a good time".

You see, I'm too nice for that. Even then I had to let him down gently and thank him for the offer!!! I really am a hopeless case!!

The North Sea Fish Restaurant, Leigh Street - just off Judd Street which goes down from Euston Road opposite St Pancras/ British Library. Nice and relaxed, slightly old-fashioned, with affordable prices for London (being slightly off the main beaten track). If you order their jumbo portions it will keep you going for a week...... and they also have an interesting selection of malt whiskies at the bar.....
Re: Today I've mostly bin...
in fact you want one with controllable holes....fernando wrote: (But I know that if I ever go skydiving that it might be best to pick a parachute that doesn't have any holes in it.)
basically if the resistance in the "bag" gets too much it fills up (the pressure increases) and the later air slides round it turning it over....... you dont want a bag full of air sucking you downwards
plus being able to direct air out in a controlled manner can allow you to sort of guide it

Interesting....Wulfruna wrote: Cod that is out this world.....![]()
Fish and Chips is my ONLY take-away (due to my funny tastes in food) - but I have NEVER had a decent meal of this in London in all the years I've visited.
Fish tends to be grey, tasteless, squashy mush texture - and that is from trying a few fish shops. So I stopped trying and picked meat-based bar meals instead.
I've often wondered what the heck they do to a bit of fish to make it look and taste like that
Re: Today I've mostly bin...
well i haven't been there but ive been in a few places like that when on holiday on the coast
but my mates at work swear a little one at whitby is the best theyve tasted

Re: Today I've mostly bin...
I have to say that I don't usually eat things like fish and chips (I have a problem with deep fried food) but the best I've ever had was haddock from the chip shop on Arbroath harbour. Rather a long way for me to go there though!!
We have a fish and chip shop at the end of our road, and I think I've eaten from there twice in 24 years!!
I seldom buy take aways at all because I feel like I could make something 10x better in the same time it takes to fetch, for half the cost!!

Don't look at this post if you're peckish.
It's ages since I've been to this place, but it's still getting good reviews. It should be pointed out that the plates are NOT small.

Re: Today I've mostly bin...
We've got a new fish & chip takeaway (and restaurant) in Bury (opened a couple of years ago). they have similar sized portions, although you can ask for a small fish instead. And the fish is just fabulous. They'll cook it fresh for you even on the takeaway side. They've won awards already for providing proper sized portions, as well as for the quality of their food. Oh, and a national award for the best loos in cafes & shops..
Reckon the place might survive for a bit, despite being out of town.
oh, and Laura, I agree. Salad is just wrong!
