Thank you, lovely people. I dragged my sorry a**e into work today, still feeling rubbish. But I HAD to go in today. We had some fabulous lessons planned for English. First it was year 9, who are starting a module on travel writing, focussing on descriptive language. We had them all bring in beach towels, sunglasses, suncream, bermuda shorts and sun hats. We cleared the desks out of the way and turned the heating up. Then we had a picture of a sunny day with crashing waves on the IWB, and the sounds to accompany it. All the kids had their towels laid out on the floor and had to imagine they were on the beach. They then had to write descriptive postcards of what they could smell, hear, touch. They moved on from "it is warm and nice" at the beginning of the lesson to pieces like " I can hear the crashing waves, making a jingling sound as the crystal clear water rushes over the sparkling sand and transclucent shells." :D

AND it was just blissful in there. I want the sound of crashing waves in every lesson please. Very relaxing. In two weeks we're going to visit "Egypt" - so it looks like the Isis outfit I made will be out! :D

Then, year 8 - we have them planning a sales pitch for the "Dragon's Den" for their own inventions. I get to be one of the dragons!

So, despite feeling like something nasty, I had a great day. I love my job! :D (Absolutely exhausted now, but ho hum. I'll probably be a real grumpy bear tonight.)

We did something very similar in history except we had to research inventions like light bulbs and fountain pens etc. and pitch as the inventors. We also took it in turn to be the dragons. There were quite a few dodgy deals going on because this was an assessment so the marks (or amount of money) that we got was recorded.

I can feel a bit of bribery and corruption may be in order when I'm the dragon!! We never did fun things like this when I was at school. WE had to sit in silence (well, we were supposed to but I could never manage that). The only lessons which really were fun were the ones when we had the head teacher (because he was always drunk).

Yeah, but in those days you had to chisel your answers into blocks of stone, didn't you?

The only lesson we were allowed to talk in was Maths, which is probably why I liked it.

I had a slight problem today....

It was pouring with rain when I picked Lally up from school, so when I got in the car I wiped my specs on my T-shirt. Unfortunately they got caught and I snaped them in half. One piece had the side piece, right lens and nose piece and the other had the side piece and left lens. (Thinking about it, I might have damaged them the other day when they fell off the bedside table in the night and I found them by getting out of bed and accidentally standing on them. ) luckily I had my reactolite sunglasses with me so I was able to drive home.

I always carry a spare of specs in my bag- old ones sunglasses or whatever. On the one occasion I found myself in a similar dilemma I had to get to a shop and buy a pair of readyspecs- Bunny thought she had dodgy eyesight but I could see perfectly for distance with her reading glasses.

I went to see Muse tonight at the O2 arena (dome) with my daughter, her boyfriend and her friend. It was absolutely amazing. I'd got the tickets on a limited last minute release of "restricted visibility" seats (the original tickets having sold out almost immediately). We were a bit concerned about the restricted visibility thing, especially since the tickets were the same price as all the others. When we got there, my heart sank. We were right BEHIND the stage, and there were these massive pillar things which went right up to the roof. So when the (abysmal) support act came on, we couldn't see them at all.

However, all was revealed when Muse came on. The covers were lifted off the towers, and the three artists were on a tower each, which rose out of the ground. The top bit stayed where it was, and it had images projected through it so that they looked like giant skyscrapers with windows in. Then it looked like there were silhouettes of people walking up and down stairs inside the towers, up and down, a bit like MC Escher stairs.

These towers rose up and down - when they went down into the stage, they were all lit up and the stage floor was mirrored so it looked like they were descending into water. There were also amazing lasers, special effects, huge balloons falling out of the ceiling, pyrotechnics, you name it, they had it.

The really good thing was that far from having the worse seats, we got a closer and better view than all the people on the floor! :D

The music was brilliant. They are just such talented musicians. And it was really "tight" if you know what I mean. They played all my favourite songs (well apart from Butterflies and Hurricanes), and I was standing and dancing (yes, and singing and clapping) for the full two hours they were on.

I realised, belatedly, what a bad move all this was for a 48 year old who'd been ill all week when, at the end, when it got really hot and all the pyrotechnics were going off, I started to feel my legs going from under me and started seeing stars. Just can't hack it any more!! Still, I had the most fantastic evening and I'm glad I went. Even if I should know better.

Shall I shut up now? :D

Sounds like a fantastic evening :) Glad you enjoyed yourself.

I genuinely don't know this band, and have had to do a Google on them. Often I don't know artists, but I know songs - but nothing on Wiki rang any bells for me :( Next step will have to be YouTube (on a machine with sound - which this one doesn't).

I actually heard their name again on the radio this morning as part of the line-up for the Children In Need concert (that is screening next Thursday). If that was done yesterday as well then then they had a busy night!

Today.... I'm trying to make sure everything is going to be OK at work for the next two weeks while I'm recovering from the guys who are going to knock me out on Monday and do me over with their Black&Decker starter kit :o

Yes apparently they were at the Albert Hall directly before they came to the O2. I can't believe they were able to put so much energy into their performance having just done another one!!

Well I seriously overdid it last night. After all that excitement I couldn't go to bed ( still excited), so didn't go until about 2.30am. Today I WOKE up at 12 noon. Yes, folks, I am reverting into a teenager!! Feel like DEATH today.

MBH don't you worry about that operation. You'll be fine. And you HAVE to go - you can't keep putting up with all those dreadful infections and breathing problems any longer. We'll all be thinking of you and wishing you well. And yes, they might need to drill into your head, it's just when they get the CHAINSAW out you need to start worrying.

OK promise this is the last time I'll post on here today (I seem to have a case of verbal overflow at the moment). I just had a lad who I'd helped out with his personal* statement for his UCAS application turn up at my front door armed with a big bouquet of flowers and a box of chocolates!! :D What they just don't get is that the "reward" I get from all this is hearing that they've got something good out of whatever it is I've helped them with. So - if he gets offers from lots of unis, that makes my day. If I've helped a kid, say learn something, and they can then pass a test, or have more confidence, or keep coming to school, or keep out of trouble, or whatever it is, then that's the thing I want in "gratification". But I must say, the flowers are very pretty, and there's no one else round here likely to buy me them!!

*Yes I know he should have done it all on his own because it's meant to be personal, but writing stuff about how fantastic you are is more or less impossible for most teenagers, well, most people, actually...apart from me that is, because I'm a smug cow.

Wyndham Theatre, right next to the tube station.

We're home, we had a really good weekend, and Grandma and the children seem to have survived without us. Friday night's charity dinner thing was the best I've been to. There was a group doing Abba songs, then about 11.15 the cast of We will rock you came straight from the theatre and spent half an hour doing the songs from their show (brilliant, my favourites) then there was another group did a couple of stints (not sure who they were, but they were wearing kilts) We were rather relieved not to win the raffle as I'm not sure how we would have got a range cooker back on the train with us.

The weather was truly dreadful yesterday, but as we were staying on the corner of Park Lane and Oxford Street we managed to spend the morning exploring the shops. (Usually my least favourite occupation, but they are better shops than you see round here )

I even solved a puzzle on the train on Friday, bringing my grand total up to two for this month.
