British Towns, Cities and Villages Quiz

#1 Post by evilkeen » Wed Dec 09, 2009 8:47 pm

I entered this the other night in the pub, in aid of 'Oakham in Bloom'. As I'm reckoning that there probably isn't anyone else on here who has an Oakham connection, and as after a day or three of inspiration I have managed to complete them (so you know I'm not posting this to cheat!), I thought you good folk might like to have a go! Let's see who can be the first with a full set of answers. :)

And if anyone feels inspired to support Oakham in Bloom to the tune of £1 like I did to enter feel free to PM me!

Every question has the name of a British town, city or village as the answer. Numbers in brackets are number of letters.
Only the place name is required. For example: This Duke had 10,000 men. = The grand old Duke of York = York
The anagrams rearranged also give a place name.

1. Cattle cross the river here. (6)
2. A saucy place? (9)
3. A formal entry to his flock. (8)
4. On his way there he met a man with seven wives. (2,4)

16. Sounds as if it might need a plumber. (4)
17. An elegant way to reach the first floor. (11)
18. A bent curry. (anagram)
19. A good place to blow your top? (8)
20. Instructions to a soldier. (5)
21. A damp place to sleep? (7)
22. A vital organ connected to a small pond. (9)
23. Share out the cards. (4)
24. Sweet clan (anagram)
25. Suitable dwellings for sailors? (9)
26. Part of a candle. (4)

Having a go -- well actually 'er indoors is having a go at it.

Know Oakham mainly through the pub that brews its own -- called the Grainstore I think, next door to the station --- they had a marvellous system of selling a pint in three third of a pint glasses then you can try three different brews without getting incapable of driving.

Yes, great pub, go there quite often, 'Triple B' is staple diet (didn't know about the 1/3 pint glasses though!), although the pub mentioned in my original post is the Wheatsheaf! :)

Eleven still to go at this moment.

I only know Oakham as an ancient Aunt of my wife's lived in Stamford and every time we went to see her we called in for a drink in Oakham. One or two pubs in Stamford sell (or sold) drinkable beer too!! Must be something in the air in that area - Aunt was well over 90 when she died and her husband made it to 100.

The only reason I know oakham is that Lands' End is there and I have visited there shop a few times as it not too far away from me living in the centre of england.

I used to be at boarding school in Stamford and went out with a boy from Oakham school at one time (isn't it dreadful - I can't even remember his name at the moment! I also went out with one from Uppingham who I do remember.)
There's no point in having a last minute if you don't use it!

Just started looking at this.
Down to 2 unknowns: 19 and 20.
I may have to ask Ms Heywood for a bit of help.

Well Looby - if he was at Oakham the odds are that he is/was a rugby player!
