 :o :o :o OI what did I do to deserve that? All I can say to you two is
SPANNER and viande de cheval bourguignon.

I've heard that rabbit stew is vastly overrated anyway.

I'm going to get a big smack from Uncle Scurra in a minute because this has NOTHING to do with the thread. And I NEVER deviate threads from their intended titles, as you two should know by now. So I will tell him that YOU started it, and then I'll lend him my nice big spanner, and a French cookery book, so that he can adequately rectify the situation. :D

I think this needs to be posted again in case anyone misses it in amongst all the animal cruelty (rabbits, metal dogs, horses... the RSPCA would have a field day).
Bunnylump wrote:OK time for a fascinating (or utterly tedious depending on your perspective) update on what to look out for in the next few weeks.

Night of December 13th (around midnight) weather permitting, you should be able to see the Geminid meteor shower. Because the position of the radiant (the point from which they appear to emanate)which is high in the sky, they should appear quite bright and spectacular. :D

New Year's eve There should be a partial eclipse of the moon - should be visible from 18:52 to 19:54 from London (not that you'll probably see much from there because of the light pollution - sorry Scurra). The particles in the atmosphere should make it appear that when the the moon is in the Earth's shadow it will look either orange or pink.

Staying back on topic, there were advertising on the local radio for an event at Kielder Observatory (Kielder Forest is about 60 mile away, and always feels further than it is when we've gone in the past).

On a light scale of 1 (unlit ship in the middle of the ocean) up to 9, apparently Kielder is the only place that scores a 2 in England.

They were talking about a christmas theme things like the Blue Snowball Nebula and the Christmas Tree Cluster (which sounds very impressive).

I know that the Sunderland society has a small observatory at Washington Wildfowl Park as well. I should really get myself organized and go on a visit some time

Keilder Forest Observatory sounds FAB. I'd love to go to that!! Bit further for me though. :( I think I'd have a job on to convince OH that he'd want to risk going there, especially as we'd probably go and then the weather would be rubbish.) Who wants to come? :D

Ahem...

Back to the topic

THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR IN JANUARY

Mars should be visible this month - it reaches opposition(that means you can see it all night) on the 29th. If you're lucky enough to have a telescope (I don't, sadly) you will apparently be able to see the polar caps and the shifting dust storms. For those of us without a telescope, we should be able to see it's distinctive red colour (caused by iron oxide) among the stars of Cancer.

You should also be able to see Saturn near to Virgo's brightest star - Spica.

You might also be lucky enough to see Mercury - best on the morning o the 27th.

Maybe I should get a monocle for my dodgy eye. I'd make a great Patrick Moore Lookielikie.

And where would you find the stars of Cancer if you are an ignoramus? I can sometimes find the belt of orion, but that is the limit of my knowledge.
