Good Lord! That sounds grim!

We appear to be running out of salt ( for the roads) here. So that could prove interesting... :?

My husband's just rushed round to my elderly neighbour's, whose pipe has just burst and she has water pouring through her ceiling.

at least it's thawing! (not much comfort I know) My friend is dreading the thaw here - she's not got any water in her kitchen at the moment. Once it thaws she'll find out if any pipe has burst...

Our road's finally got gritted (up a narrow band up the middle). Thing is, now the idiots think they can drive up it at 30 mph. Not taking into account things like walkers (who can't walk on the pavements because of the ice and the cars which are parked all over the pavement) OR the kids who periodically run into that road throwing snowballs at each other, OR the fact that if someone comes the other way they will have to go on the icy bit.

Well there are no gritters coming anywhere near us so I think they must have run out last week.* And no sign of a thaw for days looking at the weather forecast. And it has just started snowing again.

*not that they'd grit our road anyway, but even the nearest main road doesn't seem to have been gritted.

Son will have to go back to Uni by train with what he can carry and we will follow with the rest when we can get the car out of our road.

I spent time yesterday and today rescuing some of the plants in our garden that had been completely flattened by the weight of snow. It was great to see them spring back up to their normal height although I fear some will never recover.

OK number 2 child has finally got back to Falmouth. There were delays on loads of the tubes, so he ended up missing the train from Paddington. Then there were engineering works so he ended up having to get a bus part of the way, and got back to Truro too late to get any train back for the last bit. So an extra £30 for taxi fares. Ain't public transport MARVELLOUS?

If anyone saw the satellite picture of Britain in the papers, my location is on the green bit of land sticking out at the bottom of Dorset. Snow has been negligible, and I know I've been lucky; I dread to think what it's like up north - e.g. Dorchester.

Spent half an our this evening trying to move my car all of 10 yards. (to get it out of the way in the vague hope that the dustmen come tomorrow) I couldn't get any purchase and the wheels were spinning madly despite trying to shovel the snow and ice out of the way as much as possible. Ended up having to push it to get it over a small rut and tuck it as close to the fence as we could. I don't think I'll be driving anywhere tomorrow. :(
Rang my boss - if he wants me there he has to pick me up.
Am really hoping the thaw sets in properly so that I can drive soon and not depend on anyone else. And so I can get to a decent supermarket to shop and not have to make do with what the little local one has left when I get there each day  I have been getting quite inventive on meals though recently. :D

Yep, snow pie and icicle roulade all round. :P

No way am I driving tomorrow. Apparently school's open come what may. Only concession is apparently head will "turn a blind eye" to suitable footwear, so business dress is not quite so set in stone. Very generous, I'm sure.

Did anyone see any article in one of the rags about wartime rations?

I reckon if I put my mind to it I should have enough to last at least 6 months- except we are thawing rapidly now- so I'm
going to the supermarket tomorrow

I think it was either thursday or friday when the only fresh vegetables in the local supermarket were aubergines. Not quite what I had been hoping to get but with a tin of tomatoes and some pork I found in the freezer I made a very tasty dish!
The following day they had some brocolli and some cherry tomatoes.
At least I'm not wasting time planning meals and making shopping lists before I go. :D

It was raining here earlier in SW London. It is now snowing. When will it ever end?

We've had an inch or two overnight. Delaying heading for the bus by half an hour in the hope that it won't make them much later for school. Last week the 7.37am was getting them to school at 9.45am it should only take 45 mins, but the delay in the rural bits meant they hit the rush hour in the city in a major way.

 :o :o Streets of Blood? I didn't think your exchanges at the bar yesterday had got THAT bad...

...walking to and from work in the snow (3 miles each way) carrying a heavy bag. I'm k****ered. It's not the distance that's the problem, it's the slipping and sliding about with each step and trying to avoid snowballs from the kids on the way in that's tiring!! (Oh yeah, and the working all day in the middle of it bit too).

I have a fairly steep hill to climb just after I get off the bus in the morning and I really struggled to get up there in the morning with the ice but I am not allowed to moan about this according to Mum while I am still ignoring her advice on wear different shoes and then changing when I get to school.
