Where the heck does this phrase come from. At the 'meets' for the other forum (I used to visit) there is a wonderful (if strange - and that is the mild word) Tai Chi practitioner who knows just how to use this 'gentle' art to do damage to people :o When he does demonstrations or workshops he usually calls it

Bish, Bash, BOSH!

I associate that specific phrase with Harry Enfield's "Loadsamoney" character (the slapdash approach to plastering.)

All of my puzzles are simple and obvious. For certain values of "simple" and "obvious".

Yep, when I was learning Tai Chi, it was quite clear that part of the Form (that's the long flowing sequence of moves) could be used to hurt people (kicks and punches), and the advanced class learnt specific moves that were 'self-defence' ones.

Just found this on t'internet:
There are earlier references in song titles (there is a jazz song “Bish Bash Bosh”, written by Barry Harris in 1962), and, according to The Guardian, in novels – a recent book review by Steven Poole states that the phrase “the bish-bash-bosh of freemasonry”, whatever that means, appears in a 1924 novel. I am not sure whether this means the phrase was in fairly wide use before Harry Enfield’s lighting on it, or whether he, like Barry Harris and the mysterious 1920s author, invented it independently of each other.
Interesting question though! :D And I'll be very careful from now on with what I say to my favourite spiderman, just in case he practises a bit of bish bash bosh on me... (Mind you I have lightning "tickle" response reflexes, so I'd probably be fine... )

...and I hope it goes ok too. Poor love had her ONE AND ONLY observation from her so called "mentor" from Middx uni* and the kids played up something awful. :x They had been great for her up until then. *From present experience btw, this is NOT an institution which I have been even remotely impressed with. There is no comparison at all with Surrey (which is where she did her degree, and who were brilliantly supportive and organised) and them. And yes, before someone shoots me down in flames I KNOW that's probably because they are a new university and they don't have the same funding levels brought in by foreign students and research, BUT they have been calamatously disorganised (e.g. 6 weeks late getting them started on their placements) and completely unhelpful to her. Mutter mutter moan moan whinge whinge... :x

Well done Laura :) Now all you need to do is get the tunes back OUT of your head

eirian - nice to know the 'martial' aspects of Tai Chi are still being taught. Did you enjoy your learning as far as you took it? The small kicking and punching movements are usually ridiculed because the actions are so slow - but the joint locks, escapes, and basic principles of movement have so much 'codified' inside them :D Plus the embarassment factor of a thug not wanting to tell his mates he was beaten up by Tai Chi:

... playing with a prize.
I entered a competition in the December issue of Take a Puzzle to win a Nintendo DS Lite and a puzzle game to play on it. There were 10 machines to win.

However, I happened to be one of the 20 runners-up who just got the game. Nothing wrong with that - except for the fact that unless I won the machine, I wouldn't be able to play the game.

Never mind - I had a quick trip into town and bought a DSi with a free accessory pack and a choice of one of six games. It was 'deal of the week', and it worked out at the same price as just buying the machine, so the game was effectively 'free'. I also bought a case (half price if purchased with anything else instore) and took out 2 years' insurance.

Both the 'free' game and the prize game are rather addictive... :?

And even better Cenwulf, take the used puzzles to something like "Game", trade them in and get another one to replace them. Ask the trade in value first. I've sometimes got back more than I paid for a used game.

Having a hysterical game of "Articulate" ( I love that game). The word I was trying to convey to my husband was "fancying", and I was saying

"Suppose that tomorrow (Valentine's day) I was looking at you and saying you were really sexy...I would be...what?"

To which my daughter's boyfriend astutely answered:
"Lying?"

...just got back from a fantastic night at work - at the Cricket Club.

A very, VERY good band on tonight, and although I thought I was on my own, I got a helper to join me allowing both of us to enjoy the music.

It was the Jo James Band - a tight 5-piece group with Jo leading the vocals... and what a voice

I knew from the sound-checks with 'Sweet Home Alabama' I was in for a good night. I've got to say that a lot of the music I didn't actually KNOW, but I recognised it as 'well know'. OK - so I know 'Brown Sugar' by reputation, and 'Cream' (which I recognise) and 'Kings of Leon' (which I don't) got a mention. But I enjoyed their playing and singing of them all.

THEN - they took me back 30 years to a Friday Night at Feather's Caravan Site in Whitley Bay when they dropped 'Johnny B. Goode' into the program  Friday night was the slot for the resident band Black Satin - when I was first learning to tend bar.

We were told to keep the bar open till they stopped playing, and everyone (including us) wanted them to keep going  so it's been a late night. I hope they felt they had a good reception.

A quick check on Google pointed me to:

http://www.jojamesband.com/

and I'll keep my ear open for them in the future. A lovely girl, with a great stage presence [and the musicians in the band were top-rate as well].

One of the regulars said she would come to see the entertainment behind the bar. It seems I was dancing around (and throwing the empty glasses & bottles around) in time to the music  But that is exactly how I started all those years ago ;)

Totally buzzing now, so having a bit of supper before settling down.

:D :D Wow - sounds like you had a wonderful night, MBH, AND got paid for the privelege? How cool is THAT??  My evening was so very tame by comparison - we'd managed to find a copy of The Big Lebowski for £3 ,and as I love Cohen Brothers films that was good to sit and watch. But it's a bit of a sad reflection on the unexcitingness of my life that staying in and watching a dvd is a highlight, don't you think?

Sorry, talking to myself again...

...booking a holiday to Corfu. :D :D
And here's the best thing...

I was looking at a villa for 6 people to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. The package prices were horrific. But then I tried booking "villa only" and adding the flights separately. £4000 cheaper. :o :o

I rang the holiday company because I was sure I must be doing something silly. They were shocked too and couldn't understand it. But, having contacted their head office, they said that as it had been advertised as such they would honour the price. How good is that? Aren't I a lucky bunny?

Well, we wouldn't if it hadn't been for my persistent nagging for about a year. And those of you who have experienced my nagging (Scurra) will know how tortuous that can be. I decided I'd far rather have a holiday somewhere lovely with my children and their partners than do a big party and end up with lots of well intentioned but completely unnecessary silver presents!!

So - 2 weeks, villa overlooking the sea, private pool, terrace...secluded location in the beautiful north east of Corfu. I'm so excited I can't stop smiling. Are you all green yet? :D Sorry, I'm an insufferably smug purple bunny, aren't I? But you must admit it's a slight step up from a week in Dorset in the rain and thick fog...which is what I did last year.

Well done bunnylump. Booking something is the bit I hate, and now you can look forward to it.
