Nothing would surprise me. Flipping cat is an expert mouser. Mind you, her mum was so expert in catching rats and mice she was named "Piper" (as in of Hamblin) What she's not good at is KILLING them. She just brings them in and lets them go.

Smoke alarms drive me mad too. But not as much as the house alarm next door but one (which is continuously going off when they're not in because they have a parrot and an alastian which set it off.) I'm the lucky key holder who gets to go in wondering if I'm going to be savaged by the alsatian or battered around the head by a burglar each time.

These are the neighbours who have their entire house covered in Christmas stuff for months, and at present have a huge England flag across the front of the house AND an 8 foot flagpole with another one protruding out of the front...classy.

Aaaaagh! I need a holiday! To get over booking the holiday!

A couple of weeks ago we went online to try to do the thing you now have to do to register your passport with the flight. Because two of the children are over 12 we had to buy adult air tickets for them, but then the online passport thingy would only let us put a date of birth for them that made them over 16. So we phoned them and they said yes it is a flaw in the system and so we should make up a date that is as close as possble to the truth!!!!! SO now their passport details wont match on this security thing.

Our flight is at 6am, so allowing an hour for getting to the airport we will have to get up at silly o'clock, so thought we would check in online, so we could get there a bit later. We have paid an extra £20 each to get seats together (what a rip off) and the online check in thing says you can use the online check in if you have booked seats together. OH went online and the system seemed to have no record of us. So we phoned them they couldn't find us because we had booked through someone else rather than direct with the airline. The woman eventually agreed that we are on that flight, but booking seats together doesn't seem to allow you to check in if you book through someone else. I would have though most people book it through a travel agent or a company on the internet. The villa company that we booked through are closed for the weekend and the woman on the phone didn't seem to have a clue.

We don't have tickets, because it's a ticketless airline, which makes me paranoid that they will deny all knowledge of us when we arrive at the airport next Saturday.

Rant over!

How annoying, Giraffe. We just had tickets sent with one of our surnames spelled incorrectly (you'd think that they'd realise as there are 4 people with the same surname  ). The annoying thing is that I've already pointed this out to them 2 months ago.

We had a problem a couple of years ago when we booked online but not with the airline. Both seats were issued in my husband's name despite him entering full details of my name too. And we ended up having to pay an amendment fee to the airline to get it changed!! We think the error was on the travel website so have vowed always to book with the airline direct in future.

Hope it all works out OK for you giraffe.

Sorry, and also, while I'm on a roll
READERS' DIGEST.

Can someone please explain to me how they can live with themselves? They send out letter after letter after letter to vulnerable old people, telling them that they are going to win vast sums of money IF they send this reply, buy that book etc. There must be thousands of old people who are spending money on reader's digest carp who can't afford it, in the hope they will win something. AND they also send out books and dvds which they haven't ordered, and then bill them when they can't send them back. I just had a bill for £42 for some unsolicited rubbish from them at my Mum's house.

Trust me, by the time I've finished with them, they'll regret that!!

Is this the rant thread?

Last Tuesday my kettle gave up the ghost and it was only a couple of years old. I boiled it to make a cup of tea before leaving Mum in charge of the giraffelets while we set off for Sussex. I try to leave everything very straightforward for her as she gets a bit flustered, but I already had F going to pre season football training, then straight to the opticians, F starting school on Wednesday and she was getting confused (despite my list pinned to the fridge) as to which journeys were by bus and which by car etc. So I was a bit cross that the kettle chose that moment to pack up, leaving her to have to boil water in a pan.

Thursday I bought a new Morphy Richards kettle. Today it has started acting very weird. When you boil it the lid pops open, so it doesn't turn off, and then the lid wont close again. I've had to balance the oven glove on it to weigh the lid down.

I'm taking it back. Makes having a cp of tea stressful.

We went through about 3 rubbish Morphy Richards kettles before I finally bought a Dualit one, which has been brilliant.

I thought Morphy Richards was a well known make, so I went for that not the Asda own brand one.

Mind you, it strikes me that "good" makes of things means nothing. I spent a small fortune on John Lewis copper bottomed saucepans and all the handles have gone grey in the dishwasher, and the non stick has gone on the frying pan. Whereas the REALLY cheap frying pan I bought from Woolworths about 25 years ago is still going strong.

Sounds like the kettle lid has a faulty catch if it pops up so easily. The question is, will you go for a replacement Morphy Richards one or a different brand? (or the Asda one?)

Our toaster is on the way out even if it isn't more than 2 or 3 years old. We now have to hold the handle down for up to half a minute until it stays down. But looking at toasters in the supermarket I was amazed at how many wouldn't take a decent sized slice of bread without it sticking out of the top. Now what's the point of a toaster which will only cook part of the bread? (and yes, I got my tape measure out to check ;) )

I love my toaster. When I needed a new one I wanted one that took 4 slices, but in two slots, now they all seem to have four slots, so they are almost square instead of long and thin. I like it to sit at the back of the work surface, rather than taking up lots of space. What i like about it is that the up down lever is nothing to do with the on off switch. So you can lift the bread up part way, to see if it's done without upsetting the timer. I've not had any trouble with bread sticking out of the top, but it was the only one I could find that was the right shape.
