Does anyone have any idea what direction I should look in to find the moon? Couldn't find it last night and Lally needs to draw it for her homework!

Currently low in the south-west. It's a crescent in the stars of Scorpius, so it won't get very high from British latitudes.

I am trying to copy google map of an area of holland into a document . I am off on holiday and am making a document of interesting places to visit. I have tried to copy the map and make it smaller but have failed miserably.

Sounds like a job for 'Screen Dump' to me.... I described the technique in :

Once you've pasted it into a Word document (or similar) then you can crop and stretch or shrink it using the options on the picture toolbar.

Out of interest - how were you trying to copy the map? I'm hoping Screen Dumping it is more reliable.

OK I need a clever s*d who's imaginitive as far as kid's costumes go please. My daughter is planning a "showing" assembly (ie one where the parents come in to school to watch and the children all do a little bit.) She's theming it on some of the work they've been doing over the past half term - PHSE topic of understanding consequences of your actions / food chains / habitats ) - PLUS a bit about firework safety (it's being done on November 5th) AND a little play about Divali, which happens to coincide with Firework night. Amazingly, she seems to have managed to get all this in coherently, but is having trouble thinking of a way to make cheap and easy costumes for the kids who are playing Rama and Sita (and Hannuman, the monkey God, I suppose). Any suggestions?

My suggestion would be ask the parents of the children who celebrate divali how they usually represent those figures. She doesn't want to find herself in the same situation as the teacher who named the class teddy bear Mohammed, intending it as a mark of respect and offended everyone. They probably have all the necessary bits at home.

Although it was the children who wanted to call the teddy bear Mohammed in that case - which I think makes that story even more outrageous!

But yes, I would have thought asking the parents about "symbols" would be a great way to do it. We've largely lost that in our western culture - it still amazes me that people think that there's no reason to e.g. read the Bible if you aren't religious... The result is that whole swathes of references in other forms of art become meaningless. Ooops, went a bit political there

Yes, ask the parents is the best idea. My two went to a community school- quite innovative at the time. The only other was in Peterborough.

There were children of all nationalities, vietnamese refugees, chinese, asian west indian's as well as english. The schools aim was to celebrate every childs festivities, thus integrating and explaining all of their customs and beliefs.

Parents were consulted on each occasion and it all worked very well- until we got to the back of December and the english parents weren't consulted and we had an asian Santa Claus. The asian children didn't know what was going on, neither did the english and the rest were totally confused. No reason why Santa shouldn't have a brown face but has anyone ever seen one?

When in doubt, always ask first!

Well, here's the problem. I think they only have about 2 children from different cultures in that school *(and neither of them are Hindus)- it's a very "white British" sort of area she works in. Which is why it's all the more commendable that she's so determined to introduce that into her assembly.

*Total change from where SHE went to primary school, where out of the 19 pupils in her class, 10 of them were Muslims. It's a real shame - she was pretty friendly with them then, but ALL the girls have been married for at least 4 years, and most of them have at least 2 children, so she's lost touch with them all.

I'm assuming we don't have any Hindus on here? Pity. I wish I knew more about different cultures. I'm learning at work (because I have to go into RE lessons sometimes) which is actually brilliant. When I was at school they just droned on about the bible interminably. When the kids were at primary school I went to help as a parent on a trip to the Hare Krishna Temple near Aldenham (Bhaktivedanta Manor , which was donated by George Harrison). It was both beautiful and fascinating. The children got to have a ride on an Ox cart, saw some traditional dancing in full costume right up close, and were fed with traditional vegetarian Indian food that the "monks" ate. They were allowed to look at all the various shrines and icons. If anyone ever gets a chance to go I'd thoroughly recommend it. I could have stayed for days just soaking up the calm, tranquil atmosphere there!!

I may as well put this HERE - not looking for help, but just so you know..... I lost my internet connection at home last night. So total, and so immediate that I'm suspecting something physical (like the phone line falling off the wall).

Didn't get a chance to do anything sensible like seeing if we still have phone connection - but I'll be looking at it and calling my ISP and possibly BT later.
