Unique words in songs

#1 Post by MBH » Wed Nov 10, 2010 12:23 am

I'll put this in 'games' but it may get switched to 'general'.

We all know that we're a music-loving bunch in here. And it's fair to say that we have an ear for words.... especially odd words. So I wondered......

What words have you only heard in ONE song lyric? Some - ok, quite a lot - will be 'made up' words, but to me they stand out as unusual.

[This thread could quickly dry up if it's only ME that notices this  ]

One that might have been here is 'Hypotenuse' [which is not a Daily Prophet story about Harry and recreational drugs], but Giraffe helpfully showed me that James Blunt has added another song with this word in the lyric.

So here is a place where we can pose such words, have others identify where they came from with a nice rhyming couple of lines, and possibly prove each other wrong if we know other places that word appears.

To keep it friendly, how about we just use general knowledge of songs... if we search for things there's probably an obscure song that nobody knows that can be 'tracked down'.

I'll start off with:

Good-bye-ing [told you some were made up]

Where do I think it came from, and am I wrong about it being unique?

This isn't an "answer the line to post your own" - everyone join in with your unique words and we'll see how many we can identify :)

I'm sure you'll all have heard and wondered about
"Colitas"?

Well done Cenwulf - that's where I had that word from :)

Not sure about Bunny's yet - letting my mind drift on it. I'm hoping it's the real word and not one of those 'mis-hearings' as Laura suggests... Disco Light as bright - perhaps?

No, it's not a mis-hearing. Just a weird word in a well known song. I've always wondered what it means!

Hotel California? That's just going from the pattern and the rhythm, not from actually recognising it, but it does sort of ring a bell.

And yes, it was Hotel California, Laura.

I've heard of that. But only because it was mentioned on 'All the Small Things', that TV drama last year about the church choir. And I bought the DVD. :geek: Never mind. At least I know some of the songs that the kids I teach are into.

The children just reminded me of a show we went to last Christmas, where they rhymed Juicy with Goosey in one of the songs ! I love rhymes like that, that don't really work, but do with a bit of imagination. :D

True Giraffe - rhymes 'hit' me in much the same way as unique words. Even better when they add internal rhymes into the rhythm of the lyric - such as MOST of "Santa Baby":

a duplex, and checks. Sign your 'X' on the line

I just spent the afternoon listening to the fabulous lyrics of Cole Porter. Some of the things he managed to rhyme are just amazing, and even better when you know they're coming and you can see how he sets it up in the context of the song so that it makes sense instead of just being randomly there for the sake of making it rhyme.

Here are a few words I believe are unique to specific songs, in what I think is increasing order of difficulty. Which songs am I thinking of?

monstrosity
architecture
plasticine
thalidomide

You lucky thing - where was that (or what were you up to?)

EDIT: Just seen the 'Today....' thread, so I've probably answered that queston Laura  Selfish present indeed ;)

Only got a few seconds this morning, but one that sprang out from that last message has to be:
