Help protect our woodland

#1 Post by Bunnylump » Sun Feb 13, 2011 10:36 pm

This is a PERSONAL appeal from me. It's not been sanctioned by PB but it is something I feel VERY strongly about.

A petition is being gathered by the woodland trust to endeavour to restrict any damage, in particular to ancient woodlands that may be caused by adoption of current proposals concerning the nation's woodlands.

I have put my name to it and would like to at least draw the issue to your attention. If you feel you would like to sign it too, then that's brilliant. You just fill in your e mail address and get a message back from the Woodland trust to confirm that it has registered.

Scurra, Gill, I hope this isn't too "political"?

I shall certainly look at it. I must confess I don't know the details of what is proposed.

signed up even though I am in Scotland - the sold off important sand dunes to Donald Trump to create an exclusive Golf Course. I ask youe does Scotland need another Golf Course. Wher I live there at at least 5 the there is the exclusive Loch Lomond. On the East soure St andrews and Carnoustie, we have Gleneagles and on the West course Turnberry - all of which have been used for important golf tournaments!

That's completely ridiculous, isn't it? That's the problem, once things get sold off you never get them back again, do you? Short-sighted, as ever. Of course, the other problem is the loss of skilled personel who are employed to keep such gems thriving. But then the same applies to libraries (which APPARENTLY any old person can run and organise suddenly...(yeah right!). But I'll let Scurra climb on his own soap box about that one. Suffice to say I'm game for any rallying against that, too.

They are also talking about compulsory purchase because Trump wants to extend.

How do they think that when you need to have a degree to be a librarian and you have to meet the educational needs of the community - it is not just a question of buying the odd romance or latest crime fiction. The internet and its use also looms large here .

At one time I wanted to be a librarian

Looks as though this thread is now redundant. :D

Although I was considering changing the "woodland" bit in the title to "libraries" instead, since that issue is, sadly, still alive and well. :(
Never put off till tomorrow what you can do the day after tomorrow.
All of my puzzles are simple and obvious. For certain values of "simple" and "obvious".

Well, all I can say is that obviously I wasn't alone in thinking that was a flippin stoopid idea...

What is so annoying about this is that the government has said "Oops yes, we made a mistake here...." but cannot conceive of the fact that they might just have made some other drastic mistakes (unfair benefit cuts.... NHS changes..... local Council cutbacks) by rushing in too fast and too enthusiastically without giving it all proper thought and consultation. Will they now listen equally hard to the complaints made by GPs and welfare groups???????? - not to mention the libraries of course :o

Sorry - maybe this belongs in the whinge thread?

Well said Wulfrina .. I agree with you wholeheartedly. How can the claim it will be a NHS when it will be fragmented and I doubt a GP's ability to contol a huge budget. They will spen so much time on admin - when will they get to see patients.

Sorry but I had to addmy mini rant

Just so as to continue without redirecting to an alternative thread, personally I would like one very subtle change in your comment, Wulfruna. viz: "proper thought and consultation" - where (I know exactly what you meant, and I'm not being pedantic...) it should be emphasised as "proper thought and proper consultation" - far too often organisations and authorities waste so much on "consultation" sometimes even to the extent that the consultative work costs so much as to make the actual proposal unviable anyway, on account of the budget being used up. Now, cynic view it may be, but I wouldn't be at all surprised to find that where projects are cut, then they may well be spending on consultative work to "find out how effective it was" after the event. To which, perhaps the accurate answer might be "it would have been quite a saver, but for the costs of this report." Proper consultation is invaluable. Consultation, maybe - maybe not.

Ermm... I'll shut up now.

It also depends what form the consultation takes - it can be a bit like statistics - can "prove" whatever result you want it to. If you ask the right questions in a consultation, you will get the answers you are after, ask any pollster.

"proper" (consultation) was a careful and deliberate inclusion.....

I know and I read it as such Wulfruna - I only wanted to emphasise the connection of "proper" with "consultation" with partial facetiousness/cynicism/irony, as an intro for my rant.
