Clever s*ds - help required please!!

I dont know why I joined facebook- I think it was for a specific reason but I never ever go there and the reason for joining is long forgotten. If anyone sends me a friend request I always accept their request if I am a friend- but with a message telling them that I'm a lousy facebook friend as I never visit unless someone sends me a private message. Anyone I dont want to talk to ever again just gets ignored

My daughter invited me to be her friend but my son told me I was far to old to be going there. He actually said that at - lets say 26- he was also too old. I guess that means he didn't want me to see his goings on.

However, this thread has come at a very opportune moment. Today I got a friend request from SueC from DVP and Runes days but when PB set off she had quite a lot of things going on in her life. Its nice to catch up with her again.

I must say the only good thing about my brief sojourn onto Facebook was that an old boyfriend got in touch. I hadn't heard from him for about 25 years and it was nice to catch up. Although he had had a REALLY exciting life - had travelled round the world, and is now running an outdoor pursuits business in Derbyshire, so it did make me feel a bit BORING.

However, the REVOLTING thing was seeing what my nephew's girlfriend was posting about their exploits. That made me VERY uncomfortable.

Anyway, I'm fed up with keeping you all up to date with with my egg sandwich now, you'll be pleased to hear.

Two married friends from the drama group split up unexpectedly in the middle of last year (it was certainly unexpected for the female half of the relationship too). It wasn't a happy split. Although there hasn't been any vitriol between them on Facebook, we've had to put up with more details of their latest romantic exploits than we really want.

Having been through it myself, I can sympathise, and I did need to vent (and run a bit wild - ooh, did I really admit to that?) afterwards, but always in a rant to friends in person. I never felt the need to put anything in writing for all and sundry to read (not that Facebook was around then). I certainly wouldn't do so now either. It makes me feel uncomfortable but I don't want to block them either.

I had black leather trousers about 20 years ago. I donated them to the girlfriend of the the boy next door. She was a punk- and the shyest punk I've ever come across.

She was the one who would dance on the table in her ripped fishnets and suspenders. Hair all colours of the rainbow that stood about 2 feet tall - and then refuse to go to the bar because everyone looked at her and she wouldn't go to the loo on her own.

Before anyone asks- yes it was a cover up for the person underneath and the traumas she'd suffered -and she was only 21.

Right. Can anyone recommend home remedies / herbal things for stopping you getting colds?

I now have tonsilitis again, because every time I get a cold, it either turns into that or an ear infection. I'm back on the antibiotics again. But I'd really like to try and stop it happening if I can. I've been recommended Echinacea. Any other ideas?

I dont have home remedies but I will recommend PHOLCODEINE £2.95 in Boots (recommended by the pharmacist) for the dry cough sore throat etc. I've just had my second bout in 3 months. Managed to get by without the steroids this time but the inhaler was back.

I can tell you it tastes like nothing on earth. I can't describe the feeling it leaves once swallowed- but it does work!-which is the important part.

Codeine's very good for coughs but can have unpleasant side effects. I take co-codamol for migraines and I don't know whether the current ones are particularly strong, but they have one of two effects on me. Either I can't feel my arms and legs and want to fall asleep all over the place, or I feel incredibly sick. Neither is particularly pleasant. I think the very sick feeling happens when I don't eat, but I don't always feel like eating when I have a migraine.

My daughter takes Echinacea. You can't take it continuously - you take it for a few weeks and then have a break, then start again. It's supposed to build up your immune system. When she first started teaching she got cold after cold after cold. Since taking this, she does get the odd cold, but it doesn't seem to be as bad or last as long.

Personally I think the best way to avoid getting colds etc. is lots and lots of fruit and veg. That is my normal diet, and I rarely get colds. But I do notice that if I'm doing a lot of going out or am on holiday, so don't eat as much, I'm much more prone to getting ill. One of the women at work swears by ginseng for overall health benefits. I couldn't comment on that though personally.

I don't need help, but I wondered if there was a technical reason....

Why do websites for shops ask how many items you want on a page? I was looking for something earlier and it said there were 543 items and started showing them 10 to a page, and offered 20, 50, 100 or all. Why would anyone want to see less then all of them on one page. It's a total pain waiting for the page to come up after every 10 items, so much easier to just scroll down. So I was wondering why on earth they give you a choice.

Reply to Laura - I take a nutrition supplement which consists of dried fruit and veg powders in capsule form. In the last few years I have had only about one cold a year and they usually last only about two days. I do also try to eat lots of fruit and veg but the capsules do give a greater variety of nutrients.

Giraffe, I don't know, scrolling through loads of pages is tedious isn't it?

I'll have a stab at that one Giraffe...

Pulling information from a database takes time,and until you start you don't know how many results you're going to get. Once you've got the results then feeding it down an Internet link takes time dependant on a number of factors (including the speed of your own computer).

Giving the viewer the options on numbers of items per screen puts the power in their hands to balance quantity of information verses speed of screen delivery. Shopping sies often allow you to choose the order you want the information as well - so if you've got it showing cheapest first then the product you want is likely to be in the first few pages rather than 23-pages deep.

On our own Message system we get the most recent page of messages and others can be stepped back through if we want. It would be tedious if the whole 100 messages needed to be prepared, formatted, and the whole index downloaded to our screen every time we wanted to see what our [1 New Message] was.
